Roads are not typed by designation, but by function. Just because something is "State Route" or a "US Route" does not necessarily make it a Minor Highway.

I agree. Do you know what is that editor's editing level? I've got someone PM's me and complaining as well. I PM'ed back and never heard from him again. We can lock primaries at L2, minors L3, major L4 and L5 etc

Broad St & Monmouth Rd, Eatontown

Postby PhantomSoul » Sat Apr 27, 2013 6:29 pm

I've got an editor in this area that keeps changing Broad St and Monmouth Rd in Eatontown back to primary street. These 2 roads are SR-71 and last I saw in both the general and NJ wikis, state routes are automatically at least minor highways.

Has this changed? We shouldn't be downgrading roads just because we don't like to use them.

That's not what the wiki says though. According to it, minor highways should me any not-necessarily fast road that is part of a statewide network. I should be able to tell SR-71 on the map from some local neighborhood collector road.

Besides, if we go by functionality type in NJ, we will end up with a nasty patchwork of constantly changing road types that will completely confuse the routing engine. Also, it will further complicate things, as many roads that look and drive the same have different functionality in rural vs urban neighborhoods. Or perhaps it might not be even as simple as that...

At the end of the day, I am opposed to making any 2-lane roads that are part of a statewide network into primary streets. Many of these state routes, including the 500-series county roads, even though just 2-lane roads, are vital thoroughfares in many parts of the state and we should not be demoting them just because we personally wouldn't want to go that way. The state maintains route markers along them for a reason, and that, to me, makes them more than just local collectors.
