Major Highways All Over Brooklyn

Post by Dan061
Hello All,

This may have been discussed before my time but there are roads classified all over Brooklyn as a "major highways".

Granted there might be some legit ones, but most don't meet the definition of major highway or the major roads listed in NYC. What are your thoughts?

To add to this.

Roads I would consider "Major" or similar in: Queens, Bronx, Manhattan and Jersey are not labeled Major highways.

I understand that everyone is saying it's in the documentation, I have reviewed them and it still does not click for me. The traffic speed issue I don't think would apply. I have driven all of these roads and they are much slower and narrower that other roads further east.

I accept that this might be the way it is. If you take a quick look at this map and on the surface it just seems wrong.

Thanks a lot for hearing this out.

This seems to makes more sense that just sticking to the definitions. Thanks to everyone again for their replies!

Give me a day or two on this and I will PM you.

These roads are being upgraded as mentioned above to meet the new Waze guidelines for road types you mentioned. The types are determined based on the functional classifications assigned by the NYS DOT. For more info and links to the NYS DIT FC map and data see the FC upgrade project section in the NY wiki.

This upgrade has been completed in Manhattan, almost done in Brooklyn, in progress in Staten Island, and the Bronx. You can see the progress status in the table linked to in that FC section of the wiki. This is why the roads in queens which are much higher traffic are classified lower than Brooklyn.

This has been done in short to enhance the routing server options and allow much better navigation results, especially when there is traffic on the freeways.

If you'd like to help with this upgrade project you can, just let me know first so we can ensure you understand how it is to be done.

First thing you need to do is tread the wiki again with a fresh perspective on Road types USA, functional classification, and the NY page section on make roads, then from the new York page find the NYS GIS map and see if it makes sense to you. If you have any questions ask. Then we'll figure out a section for you to work on in your editable area. We generally do a county at a time starting from the highest road type and working our way down.

Urban primary arterial roads are often mere surface streets. Do not be misled by the word "highway" in the description. In many places where construction lags behind design, like Brooklyn, roads designated as primary arterials may not necessarily look like highways. According to agreed-upon guidelines in the Waze editing community, this is ok and accounted for by traffic speed via the navigation engine.

Mr. Dan061,

It's not often these days I see someone begin a conversation with a strong opinion, listen intently to a counter argument, press on when it still doesn't click, then finally not only change how they feel about the topic, but offer to support the new position. Quite refreshing.

Much respect. Welcome to our community!

This is most likely due to the functional classification project. In order to be classified as a Major Highway, a segment must meet one or more of the following criteria:

-Other Principal Arterial (or higher)
-US-Highway or Interstate Business/Spur/Loop
-Otherwise meet the qualifications for upgrade from a lower type based on the physical properties of the road as identified on the Road types/USA wiki page

It is a drastic change for many roads in many areas, but it was decided by the Champs that this is what is best for Waze users based on how the routing engine uses different road types to calculate the best trips over varying distances (long distances especially).

If you're really into reading (its very long), you can check out this forum post for some history on how this project came about.

In general, you should never change a road type without first checking with your State Manager (PesachZ in NY), Regional Coordinator (orbitc for the northeast), or a US or Global champ. Exceptions are non-public segments such as Parking Lot Roads and Private Roads (provided the change meets the requirements on the wiki page you identified). Even a single segment of the wrong type in the middle of a long stretch of otherwise properly classified highway can do bad things to the routing unfortunately.
