Taskforce - Fixing UR's in NYC

Post by jdelosa
This comment is coming from a NYC based Editor.

So I have Closed a number of URs lately and i have noticed that not enough emphasis is placed on handling them. I think we need to increase this among new editors and old alike.

I know its not sexy and does not get you mass edit points but its what sets Waze apart from other GPS systems. the fact that a reporter can report a road change and we can get it onto the map in a few days is not available anywhere other than here, But only if we as editors pay attention to them.

I know in my limited area I can see 20 to 30 new URs a night.

They seem to break down into a few types.

The missing address causing bad destinations. This is a HN problem, another not so sexy editing procedure that needs a lot of attention.

The No turn Allowed, this is going crazy in NYC due to out Crazy DOT restricting turns daily

routing detour that the reporter did not like, which i understand cause waze will sometimes give me some odd routes, one or two blocks out of the way for no APPARENT reason. (but we know better)

The Road Change, something the reporter sees that we have not adjusted on the map.

and the I wonder what this button does?

Mainly if a UR is Answered in a few days from when they are reported you get the best results and usually a reporter happy to help with the closing process.

With the number of Wazers using the app in my area I guess this is probably a small amount, but i still think more work need to be done.

I think that if editors could answer and close URs out side their edit areas it would help. I feel if a edit to the map needs to be done the editor could get someone who can edit in that area to make the repair. or we could start a UR things to Do sheet to, but that only works if someone answers the UR.

Respectfully Submitted,

I think JD has a very good point and that NYC is a unique location. There is 8 million people in NYC and close to 20 million if you look at the surrounding area resulting in a massive amount of URs. Just take a look and you will see so many URs in the city.

I also have been tackling some of these recently and find a similar range of reasons for a UR.

Now I would say even with a fresh UR there is still a low chance of getting a response (ironically I find that often the older ones are more prone to respond with the are you kidding me this was 6 months ago but I have no specific data to support that).

Once you do get a response handing them can be challenging as many of the roads are uplocked (which I think is the right thing to do). The other challenge is that right now with the thousands of UR in NYC you still get a large number of response just due to volume of URs you are working.

This past week I had probably 6-12 just needing a house number bump on L4-L5 locks. I don't mind the need to get the unlock and relock but this could flood the GHO and I like JD thoughts about a shared spreadsheet.

I think that maybe creating one broken up by boroughs could easily show the issue the PL the lock level and a check box for unlocked, relocks and completed. I had been giving thought recently about having one person making contact with these URs and then having them divided among a team either by boroughs or just collectively shared.

From my perspective I think we need a couple more users helping with the volume in NYC, more of a collaborative approach and maybe a better way to handle the unlocks.

NYC is unique and with the number of ur, roads, people could be its own state. We definitely need to do a better job here and I think JD point about this being where waze can shine is why it is so important. I know I heard many of my colleagues talk about waze and how well it works for them. NYC is a great place to have word of mouth spread and with the number of visitors in and out of the city will help either spread the good news of waze or reaffirm how well it works. With more traffic calming going on in NYC there so much changing and we need to do better on staying on top of this.

That said, I am 100% on board with being part of the solution, whatever is decided.
Yes Matt I think you have a good Point and we have started some discussions with qwaletee who is the ARC, about how to tackle NYC as a good starting point and maybe a model for other highly populated areas.

Lets work on getting you up and running with URs in the NYC area so when we got things more worked out you will be able to slide right into whatever is planned.

Any chance with this upcoming map raid house numbers can be a reported statistic? It def part of the problem and showing which editors helped the most might raise it as a priority among the map raid members

So I was circling back to this post and wondering what are our current thoughts about a Map Raid or UR sweep. We made some great progress to bring the numbers down with the self organized raid by rfrsw101) but we have gotten a little stagnant with our progress and I know NYC could use some TLC.

Is a map raid still a possibility with maybe some place updates as a secondary agenda. As we wind down the state map raids for speed limits (great job Vermont and go New Hampshire) it be nice to circle back to NY sometime soon and help get things touched up a bit.

Also probably be a map raid that could be opened to a broader editing rank and with the activities with the NY state bootcamp to be nice to engage some of these editors in the same area.

Thoughts?

orbitc wrote: I need to talk to local SMs and champs in NY first. But, the raid should be boro by boro.
But of course with that large of a densely populated area a more focused approach is needed. There maybe some need in NJ as well.
orbitc wrote: I think it should be limited to USA editors with certain rank and up. That's was the key for the success for the VT MR.
That definitely allowed for an easy to set up and mostly self sufficient raid, but I would just advocate that If we are restricting by rank to have some allowance for the the local established editors who participate in the NY bootcamp.

Thanks for everyone's input.....

Until something better comes along I'm following a simple formula.

I primarily use UR comments and the custom script, cause I like to add my name as a personal touch, for my response data base, and UR-MP tracker for my organization.

I started with a small scan area and answered every new UR. And a few oldest ones... And made it my mission to every time I log on to answer the new one.... I find the best chance of getting a helpful response is when a UR is fresh. Then when I have a UR that requires help from a SR Editor and one is not available I made a to-do list to keep track once I got the first area under control I opened my scan area to include more ....
Still answering all new URs each day.

The biggest challenges are new Turn Restrictions and HNs not being bumped.
And believe it or not that is my personal Hump. First of all most HN complaints come on L4 and L5 locked roads and fixing them is slow.

I think we should impress on all new Editors ( cause it hard to teach an old dog new tricks ) that when they get an unlock that they have to check the house numbers to have a complete and quality edit.
I also think that Waze should rethink there lock on HNs... I don't think that they should be locked at the same level as the roadway. Or that a editor could be given access to an area for a HN project that will let them edit the HNs even above there edit level.
I think that will help with the cleaning up of URs.
