NY-17 / I-86 Project

Post by Spil
Just as an FYI, I'm working on cleaning up NY-17 (future I-86) from Binghamton (I-81) to Wallkill (I-84). I should be arriving at the new-construction area around Hancock soon (the one that was referenced as a major issue elsewhere in the forum a few months ago, where the new road goes through a mile south of where the old road was) -- fun, fun! :D

Hey Spil, I drove 17 from I-84 to Binghamton, I wasn't in my car so I didn't have my windshield mount to closely monitor everything that was going on, but Waze didn't freak out at all so I guess you got it right. Only thing I noticed was that there are a few segments still marked as major highway instead of freeway here

Yea the only thing that went wrong was on my return trip, I didn't trust Waze and the 5000 construction signs with that on-ramp closure/detour, so I ended up driving an extra 5 miles south to pickup the next exit to get on the north side again. :(

I did have an issue with one of the exits in Syracuse not matching the road signs, I'm not 100% familiar with the area so I'll check out the maps to figure out what went wrong.

Ok I figured it out,

https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=6&lat ... s=34813825

Waze says "East Syracuse" in addition to everything else, but the signs do not, one of the other nearby exits said East Syracuse, so it threw me off a little.

Google streetview confirms that it is just I-690 W / Fairgrounds / Baldwinsville

It is locked so I can't fix that.

I drove WB from I-87 to I-81 a couple days ago, but was using Navigon as Waze would chew up too much roaming. :( Neat project, what is the story behind this road?

Is that where there are still at-grade intersections?

... and the "v" is for Volvo.

8-) NY-17 / I-86 is now "complete" on Waze's maps for its entire 397.54-mile length, from Erie, PA (I-90) to Woodbury, NY (I-87)! 8-)

Of course, "complete" lasts only until the end of November, when NYSDOT is scheduled to finish the upgrades on the Southern Tier Expressway portion and rename the NY-17 section between Elmira and Binghamton to I-86 ... then I'll have some more work to do. ;) And once they finish carving up Prospect Mountain at the end of 2015, then there will be even more work to do, as the I-86 designation marches eastward yet again. :)

But for now, NY-17/I-86 should be a pleasant trip, wherever you happen to Waze it. (Okay, wait a couple of weeks for the last couple of days of editing to get caught up on the LiveMap -- then it should be fine for you! :? ) If you do experience any problems with it, though, feel free to let me know ... I already know that I'm not perfect, so you won't be bursting my bubble any.

Now on to another project ... where to turn, where to turn? I do see that Utica-Rome appears to be a bit of a no-man's-land as far as editing goes ... perhaps that would be a nice diversion from my highway-building efforts :D (I lived and worked in that area for 9 years, so it's an area with which I'm reasonably familiar, although I haven't been back there for nearly 5 years now). However, if any of you are from the Utica-Rome area and want to tackle it yourself, just say the word, and I'll be happy to back off and turn my efforts elsewhere -- there's still plenty of work left in the Empire State for any of our Wazers who want to take that next step toward becoming complete Waze addicts!

(Sorry for the delayed response ... I spent the weekend moving the family to our new home! :))

Wikipedia has a pretty detailed article on NY-17/I-86 here, including a lot of the history of the road and how it got to where it is today.

Yep, that's it exactly. Not sure when NYSDOT plans to take care of that Sanford/Hancock area and get that up to Interstate standards, but it should be in the works soon, especially since they're (hopefuly!) almost done with the Elmira area now. In the meantime, that section does need to stay as Major Highway, yes.

Glad to hear that you had a good trip there, Froggy ... that's what makes these "wasted hours" (my wife's expression, not my own ) worth it all! :D
