Hamlets, CDP, Zip Codes

Postby johnsninja58 » Thu Mar 22, 2018 1:43 am

This is the second part post regarding City Naming, please make sure you have had a chance to read the post on Duplicate City Names. We have encountered many issues with people utilizing mailing addresses or other city names than what currently exists in WME. There are many considerations here and this issue has been long debated topic. And there is many complexities to this issue.

Big issues:
Finding accurate and definitive boundaries if we were to add any alt cities
Possibility of duplicate cities being created/used
Not all places might need the same solution

Some areas that this has been a problem is Queens, and Long Island. Im sure there are quite a few others.

The Suffolk GIS has great boundaries for the hamlets, which maybe a good testing site.

Ideally start in a concentrated area and expand. We should discuss pro/cons first before starting any test and I ask if anyone has case examples that they have implemented that may help with the discussions.

I agree, but would also like New Jersey and Pennsylvania included in this discussion, as both have the same issues, with just different incorporation type names.

I believe the problems are similar enough among all 3 states that there is a common solution that can be applied to all 3.

I would like to see Region wide standards where ever possible. So I would like to either move this to the region or invite all the other states into this thread.

Following up, still no updates on this issue. I hope that some progress can be made as this is an issue that we've juggled with for years and I know especially coming from the Long Island perspective where Towns, villages, Hamlet's are the norm better guidance is needed to help address some common addressing issues.

Hello,
Since I live on long island in the "Town of Hempstead", the Wazeopedia only indicates City and Towns. However I find that this is not reflective of the practice on Long Island nor appropriate for a destination. Can you further indicate best practice to this? It doesn't appear there has been any further clarification to this point.

Is this a question best dealt with at a national level as it appears that there has been no further discussion on this topic?

This is still being actively worked on. The problem is the variability with how different parts of the state are structured and it's hard to just "draw a line" on which parts of the state follow which guidance. For now, Long Island is using the Hamlet names instead of Hempstead.

This discussion doesn't work nationally or even at the Northeast level, because this pattern varies state to state.

I was under the impression that there was no official stance on Hamlets, this has never been reflected in the forum or Wazeopedia. Per PhantomSoul this was a regional issue. And locals were not to be involved in the debate. I would have preferred a utilization of hamlets on Long Island. I would urge the NOR leadership to address this as I know it impacts many end users from direct reports and I continue to experience issues with this when down in New York.
