California cities removing red light cameras

Post by nakedmac
In the Bay Area, Belmont will discontinue red light cameras as of July 1. Hayward and Redwood City are reported with Belmont as having removed their cameras also.

Older media reports point to Emeryville, Cupertino, San Carlos, Burlingame, Union City, Yuba City and Berkeley as having previously taken out their red light cameras. Elsewhere, there are indications that there are none in Santa Clara (San Jose) or Contra Costa counties. Any others?

As this seems to be a reversal in trends, should we keep an updated list of confirmed locations that no red light cameras exist for map editors' reference? From my experience, users continue to report red light cameras in Emeryville that no longer physically exist.

How should we handle the many City's that are abandoning the cameras and regulatory signs in place? If we remove the cameras from the map, others will just add them back. I say leave them on the map until the cameras and signs have been confirmed removed. Anyone else have a thought????

Thanks,

Uncheck the Approved box.
Won't that make the camera go away after the 30days?

I think the primary question is which do we want:
(1) having camera warnings for cameras that are no longer used for enforcement, or
(2) get URs for cameras we remove from the map, but are still visible to the motorist?

If you're willing to go to the site, you could enter a new camera as "fake", then get rid of the others in WME. That might solve both issues.

Otherwise, I would optimize for whatever is the least work for you fighting the URs (and new editors!). That would probably mean leaving the cameras be and letting drivers get bogus warnings. Most drivers already seem to think those ubiquitous traffic cameras are for enforcement so this may fit right in with the prevailing belief system and there will be peace in the land ;)

Might be good to have our own list, but I've found that this site, while a little focused on the "ticket beating" side of things, tends to keep the listings pretty up to date.

As far as removal and placement, it seems that people tend to add them even when they're already on the map, around here. They don't show in the app until they're confirmed, and unapproved cameras fall off the editing map after a few weeks, anyway.

Uncheck the Approved box. (Assuming you are at least as high in Rank as the editor who approved it.)

Mustang, thanks for the pointer to that IIHS site. I'd previously found the list of municipalities currently using cameras, but forgot about it. I'm thinking a link to that page on the Cameras/Legality Wiki page would not go amiss. I'm assuming you've seen the Waze Wiki Cameras page... you may want to visit again. It has a fairly comprehensive rundown on various camera-looking things.

And, the IIHS site would appear to confirm what I've read (without references) elsewhere; that CA has no Speed Cameras.

As Dwarf says, whatever makes it easiest at that point. Obviously as long as the cameras are in force, they should stay put. Once the program is discontinued, my personal preference would be to remove them and just deal with letting folks report any on-site but inactive cameras (and let them disappear or delete them) rather than have to answer URs from people getting told there are cameras there. Kinda six of one....

As for nakedmac's original post, I made myself a Google Map for my local area with pins indicating the intersections and directionality of known Red Light Cams, so I don't have to keep looking things up here and there when the Waze map gets altered. And, the link above to the IIHS page gives a pretty good look at the general list of cities with active programs, but no details.

Santa Clara County (San Jose, Cupertino, etc....) disbanded their red light camera (RLC's) programs long ago. I've been noticing wazers reporting RLC's in Santa Clara County but what more than likely they are reporting are the traffic detecting cameras on top of the signal lights. So I would delete any reports of them in that area.
