Ramp Naming For Illinois

Post by Bigbear3764
As I go thru the freeway ramps and fixing them, I think we need to add a section for our state Wiki page. State Routes are the primary discussion. I think, correct me if I'm wrong, that we refer to state roads as routes more than highways. So if we follow the Wiki for the USA, the roads should be named State Route XX, and US Hwy XXX.

Now for exit ramps, I have found that SR-XX shortens the directions listed for your next turn with everything that is on a Big Green Sign. TTS pronounces SR as State Route. And US-XXX for US Hwys.

If we all agree, we can add it to our Wiki page. I don't know if it would belong in a category here:
http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Illi ... ds_By_Type

Or here as a subcategorie titled road naming: http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Illi ... cial_Roads
or
http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Illi ... gorization

Thoughts?

Good timing. I have been thinking about adding a naming convention section for a little while now.

Growing up a few hours SW of Chicago, we always referred to State and US highways as "Route" (pronounced rout as opposed to root). I don't think we had any number overlap so we didn't differentiate between state or federal highways.

I don't see a reason to go with IL-## even though that is more accurate than SR-##. The TTS will yield "eye-el-##" which I think would be more confusing that "State Route ##".

While not of use for ramp names, do we want to standardize county roads/highways names as well? The USA road naming wiki lists two options; "CR-##" (TTS reads as County Road ##) or "County Highway ##". Most/all of the county highways in urban/suburban areas have another name that is used on signs and addresses (e.g. DuPage CR-3 (for the most part) is Warrenville Rd) so the county road name isn't that important. In rural areas, however, the county road name may be the only designator.

So, here would be my suggestions:

Federal Highways: "US Hwy ##" on the road / "US-##" on ramps
State Highways: "State Rte ##" on the road / "SR-##" on ramps
County Highways: "County Hwy ##" on the road / not applicable for ramps

Once we have a consensus, I would suggest adding the text to the Major Roads section.

Agreed. Lake and McHenry have County routes on the map, but we all refer to them by the street name. I have been fixing those as i see them. I have seen some odd naming (to me anyway) down south for their county roads.

I've updated the top of Major Roads section to reflect the discussion above and changes that have occurred since this thread started.

This part has changed. US Hwy XXX is now US-XXX. We are still using State Route XX for now. There may come a change with a mass edit from Waze to the SR-XXX.
