One thing I want to be clear about here is dirt roads because Functional Class may seem strange here. Some dirt roads will come out to be a primary street and logically in Minnesota we imagine all unpaved roads to be dirt roads. Really in reality, we should have a check box for unpaved roads such as the check box for toll roads, but until that happens we still need to pay attention to functional class.

Here is what I have been doing when it comes to dirt roads. I follow functional to a tee with roads that have classification. Now, I still think not all roads deserve the dirt road classification. How I decide this is I look at is the road a County Road or a Township road (or just a named street). If it is a County Road, I set this as a street and all lower level unpaved roads I label as a dirt road.

Lately, I have talked to MnDot as I have found many roads with improper Functional Class. From speaking to them, they agreed that the maps are about 5-6 years outdated in some areas and stated they are working on fixing this. That does not mean to abolish the functional class system, but to be aware of areas that have had major road changes over the past 5 years. Just keep in mind that Functional class is usually correct.

If anyone has any debate on the Functional Class setup in a certain area, use this guide to kind of help you figure out if the state maps show correct information. http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/proces ... tion03.cfm

Also, use https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Road_types/U ... ence_chart to recognize what is expected with editing roads from Functional Class standpoint to the road classification types of Waze.

Can we get a clarification on the met counsel maps? They use some different descriptions and colors. My take on it is that that all of the A-Minor's and the grey Other Arterial becomes Waze minor highways, and then the Major Collector and Minor Collector are Waze Primary streets.

The Minnesota Wiki specifically referrers to the colors on the map, but the colors don't match the Met Counsel map and that confused me at first. Could we get it updated to whatever is decided on the Met Counsel map?
