Court says it's legal to look at map on phone while driving

Steven Spriggs had unsuccessfully fought the ticket in traffic court and later in Superior Court, arguing that the law only prohibited talking on the phone, not looking at a map.

That is fairly significant when several of your major commuting arteries are parkways.

Sure but the question remains what do the cell phone use bans listed really ban you from doing.

Here in Arizona only a school bus driver is restricted from cellphone use. Nothing else.

But if you need a quick rundown, check this site to see all the states:

Not always. There have been times when the Federal government forced a traffic law on all the states (55 MPH limit)

Traffic laws will always be local, so consult your state's law for the rules of the road.

That is true, but it was repealed in 1995. The only place I have seen a federal officer cite for speed is in a federal park (Ranger) and on a military base (MP). I labored to find a federal statute for speeding with no luck outside of specific locations such as individual parks. Makes me think that the cites the MPs write go through local courts especially if they cite a civi on base. Military folks chime in on that.

I'm in South Africa, and here too people are so indoctrinated with the paranoia of using a phone while driving. NO TALK, NO TEXT, NO TOUCH. while I often consult live maps for traffic conditions and alternative routes. My passengers think I chat and play games while driving, in the stead thereof I am trying to optimize travel. I must say, Waze is doing a pretty good job for me thus far :-) I'm starting to trust it more, bit by bit
