Train strikes car in Clifton after GPS leads driver onto tracks, NJ Transit says
By Kathryn Brenzel/NJ.com

CLIFTON — A NJ Transit train struck a Volvo in Clifton on Wednesday after a woman — misdirected by her GPS— drove and got stuck on the tracks, agency officials said.

Jill Bacharach, 46, of Little Falls, drove into a construction area near River Road and Route 3, tried to drive over train tracks, became stuck and got out of her car, said New Jersey Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder. At 10:30 p.m., the engineer of a Port Jervis-bound train spotted the car, but he was unable to stop before striking the vehicle, Snyder said.

No one was injured in the crash, but Bacharach's vehicle was totaled. NJ Transit is still assessing the extent of the damage caused to the train. Approximately 300 customers were on the train at the time of the collision and were delayed for an hour and a half before a replacement train picked them up, Snyder said.

A preliminary investigation of the incident indicates that Bacharach followed her GPS into a construction area about half a mile east of the Delawanna train station in Clifton, Snyder said.

"It's not easy to access this area," Snyder said. "It’s a construction zone and a railroad right of way."

Bacharach was issued a summons for reckless driving.
