US Territory Names

As I prepare the new template for managing states, territories, and districts (Washington DC), I wanted to finalize the territory names that we want to use.

I see from the Regional Coordinator page we have: Based on this Wikipedia page the list matches and at least we have a source for the list in case people ask. However the use of the term "insular" was new to me. I do not propose we use that in place of "territory", but I might mention it.

For Northern Mariana Islands, I see "mp" comes from the ISO 3166 code and Internet ID. I see from the List of U.S. state abbreviations they use MP here as well. I guess we should keep that entry as the abbreviation, and then on the actual page we can use the full name and have MP be a redirect to the full page name. Although it appears Waze has no data on that area (unless my links are on the wrong Live Map server), so not much we need to do there yet anyway. ;)

I actually checked into this during my Territories debacle. lol.

Might I suggest, to not have confusions with the ISO abbreviations, we have the full name of the territory followed by its abbreviations in parenthesis?
example: Northern Mariana Islands (MP) or (MP) Northern Mariana Islands

  • RC Map - Currently only abbreviations, but maybe add them in a footnote what they mean for all the territories since not well known.
This makes the best sense.

Define where you suggest including the abbreviation?
  • RC Map - Currently only abbreviations, but maybe add them in a footnote what they mean for all the territories since not well known.
  • The actual page - Seems overkill since the page name appears so many places automatically and no other states do it. Maybe just saying it on the actual page (not on the page title) is ok.
  • USA Navbox - Would not make sense since it gets the names from the actual page currently.
