Selection Bar

Post by robindlc
We are currently working in updating the Spanish wiki, and found that most of the the people go into the wiki basically looking for 3 or 4 specific sections... Editing Manual, Map Editor, FAQ...

Based on this template used for the Editing Manual, {{ReturnToEditingManual}} and seeing the ideas from PortiXole in its Colombian Wiki to make it more friendly, we come out with the idea of this selection bar which can be used at the top of the main page or the main articles or wherever can be considered as convenient to have available the main links...

It can be used even in the pages linked. In such case the link to the particular page were you are, turns to white.

I have added the template in the FAQ and Glossary as example.

Pls feel free to remove if you do not like the idea... Of course you can also modify the links or texts shown. I just wanted to show you the idea.

I think it is a good addition.

I noted a few of the links might be better named and linked slightly differently. I made those changes directly.

The change is fine to me.

If we need to add more text to the bar moving forward, we can consider:

1. Changing "For New Editors" to "New Editors" or "Editor Intro"
2. Reduce the font size by two points, but not too small
3. Wrap it to two lines

After thinking about this more, I wonder if we need the intro link in the Selection bar, or just very prominent on the top of the WME page since once you get through the Intro page you no longer need it. I think the only down side is if you end up on the other pages (FAQ, Glossary, etc.) you would not see the intro link.

If we want to keep the link in the SelectionBar then we might consider changing the layout to:
{{SelectionBar}} wrote:Intro * Glossary * FAQ * Waze Map Editor * Manual * Country guides * Forum
where "Intro" is the link to the new WME/Welcome page.

Perhaps change "For New Editors" to "Welcome" or "Intro". My preference would be "Welcome"

Personally I am more included to Intro, or Welcome, but I don't hate New Editors.

Great to see you liked it. IMO it should be added also, at least, in the pages linked (Waze Map Editor, Editing Manual and Country Guides) as it also provides a way to go out from those pages. :)

IMO links in selection bar should be for the sections more visited, searched, helpful or relevant... and there is a limited space. So I'm more in the idea of

Of course, we can accept this is a very special welcome section and put it in selection bar... but we would need to rename as "Intro" or "Welcome", since "Welcome New Editors" uses too much space. In this page selection bar takes two lines due to lack of space. I do agree with Kent (doubting about using "Welcome" or "Intro" but both are ok for me)

Question:

Currently, selection bar template is only used for the pages the template itself links (obviously could be used everywhere, but this is the current situation).

As it is now, when you are in one of the pages linked, the link in the selection bar turns into white... My question: is there a way to code the template to, instead of showing the link white, simply remove it, giving space to the other links...?

Could this be done in a single template?
