this is going to drive people away from the places system. they obviously took a good amount of time to input all their information, but because the app doesn't make it crystal clear how to create a new place vs update an existing place, I have to reject this change to prevent wiping someone else's place out.

The location was correct - it's in a strip mall right next to Cardio Express. There are two problems here:
1) the wasted effort on the submitter's part (and like you said, they might get banned)
2) there aren't enough map editors on the planet to continue to moderate this kind of thing. We have 2 SMs, another 1 or 2 AMs, and a handful of level 1/2/3 editors in Connecticut. We may be one of the smallest states in the union, but that's not even enough people to handle one county, much less one state.

All I can hope for is that the data entry process becomes rock solid so we are handling exceptions rather than the bulk

These are all things that should be clearly laid out by Waze counsel. They are the ones assuming the risk.

It would be lovely to have that page make more sense :). Thanks, v.

I would not throw away the size component altogether. It makes sense to me, for example, that a small hotel/convention center with a ballroom seating a couple of hundred, could do with just a point place, while a mega hotel/convention center, by its nature, is a distinctive landmark.

I recognize that since size has made it a landmark, then a landmark it is and mentioning size-dependent may seem redundant. But some may not be willing to recognize it as such without the note.

I don't know that there is any global agreement at all. The current page is a direct descendant of the page that was created when Places went live in the US.

Also,, we really can't get too pedantic over naming standards. If say, Michelin tomorrow starts a chain that sells a more extensive set of parts, and calls it Michelin Headquarters, what are you doing to do with your naming standard?

Agreed, and I like how you worded it generically.

But I would tighten up the language:

ONLY fire stations that respond to nearby fire emergencies should use this category. All others should use a different category, such as Office. Administrative, training, and support facilities are not emergency locations.

You run into thorny arguments either way you go with that. I don't remember a consensus on that.

It shouldn't be restricted to fire emergencies. A fire department run ambulance station should qualify as well. Instead of "fire emergencies" why not use a bit more inclusive language "...that respond to, or have the personell to address nearby or on-site fire or medical emergencies..."

Just take out FIRE, and leave in EMERGENCIES. Less is more.
