My name is Karen and I am the newest member of the Community team! My position is Community Content Management Specialist.

A big part of my job in the coming year is to work with the community to upgrade the Wiki. I know many of you are already super-active editors/creators of the Wiki, so I wanted to take this opportunity and invite you to get involved in this Wiki-focused sub-forum.

Here are just a few of the ideas I have, some of which are already in the works:
  • Artwork Revamp
The Waze design team is already hard at work on a new skin for the Wiki. We will also be renaming the Wiki. Nethunter (our developer and in-house wiki-master) suggested "Waze-o-pedia" - any other ideas?
    Creation of Localized Wikis
Many communities already have their own Wiki pages. However, the fact that these are all searchable within the Waze.com/wiki can be confusing.
Therefore, we will work on separating the communities (and therefore languages) so that on the main (English) wiki, you receive only answers in English. We will then create separate URLs for communities/languages on an opt-in basis which will be self managed.
We will then work on migrating the appropriate content to these pages (ex: English content wiki will be en.waze.com/wiki and Brazilian content will be at br.waze.com/wiki). If you share a language with another community, content can be shared. This allows local communities to have localized content on their wikis and makes finding answers much easier.
 Creation of a Wiki Expert Group
These users will work directly with me and help decide the new structure and focus in the coming year. For those of you who already know the wiki inside and out, I am counting on you! We've already compiled a list of active users and will be in touch directly with you shortly. Sign up form is below.
 Creation of special "Gated" pages and Project Pages
There are many pages of high importance and therefore should only be edited by experienced users.
Special Project Pages to take-on and organize areas of focus.
 New Wiki Editor & Wiki Expert Forum Badge and Wiki-based badges.
Also being worked on by the Waze art dept.
    And much, much more....
Interested in being part of the Wiki Expert group? Please fill out this form.

 Have ideas for the Wiki? Comment below and let's get this party started! 8-)

I am so excited for the road ahead!

Happy Travels and Happy New Year,
-Karen

I would be more than happy to present verified things in my native Czech language, but what I see as an issue (after being active editor about half a year I am still learning) is a lack of information about the real conditions and algorithms built in the software and ways to influence the behavior (even among the English speaking communities). Documenting the software and the best practices of using it on the basis of rumors and own research often leads to incomplete and/or even misleading results. I understand that lack of information about anything including future plans with some dates it is the way how it used to be and probably still is, but I do not think we can really improve the quality of the documentation much without getting enough information from the source - in this case probably from developers, unfortunately not the source itself ;)

Hi Karen

Happy to meet you.

I am pleased to informe you that we took care of the Wiki issue two years ago, as we found out that Wiki could easily be modified by whoever (I believe it's still there)

So we moved our wiki on a platform using Joomla...much more friendly usable and easy to develop than Wiki one.

We informed Waze Staff about the changement we did and it has been highly appreciated.

On Wiki Italian Page and on all Italian Forum as well we put references to our whole and UNIQUE EDITING GUIDE for all our Waze users

It contains all type of informations needed either by lev1 or lev6 editors and it's weekly updated ...if necessary ...or in case of new features added to WME production.

I hope you will appreciate as well the job Italian Team have done in order to facilitate the use of any kind of informations needed by editors or by simple Waze users.

Our FB and twitter pages report almost every week informations/ suggestions to use our Guide.

We have our "Wiki Team" already in force so ,if needed, we would be happy to be part of your Wiki Group

Jean Pierre , one system or another is not so important : what is really important is that it will be really helpfull for the editors.

That must be our Target !

Jean-Pierre is really enthusiastic about our new wiki due to the tremendous work that as already been achieved by the small team working with me (and especially Jean-Pierre, as proficient spellchecker  ) and this could lead to some slight chauvinism ;)

Anyway, you're right. As a french proverb says : Comparison is not reason. Whatever is the form, only the content counts (as far as the form does not overshadow the content). and in both cases, the ease of use contributes directly to provide clear and efficient accessibility to the right information whenever required.

Karen, I'd be glad to be on-boarded in this wiki expert workforce and to both contribute to a better Wiki and share my wiki skills.

Thanks Karen for this appealing program !

The good news is that, if you check the tabs at the top of the local french wiki, we are perfectly on the same page, as your main workstreams match exactly the way we've decided to organize the content ;)

Ready for the next steps !

I want to be honest:

Guys, you in North America, have performed and continue to perform a tremendous work with the wiki, by testing and questionning and modelizing every concepts/tools/features that have been developed by Waze and put in our hands.

I don't want to talk on behalf of other countries, but in France, we fully rely on your job. We do not test or modelize anything. We just take your outcome and, as french users are well-known to be poor english speaker/reader, we just translate your content in French to avoid potential misunderstood concept (due to an ineffective translation) which lead to personal (mis) interpretation, which lead to discrepancies in the map editing consistancy.

because a lot of people have tried, on their side, to translate this or that article, often without achieving the job, after 4 years, the french wiki was a mess staggering between a museum of obsolete content and a proliferation of same-subject articles, all saying something different (according to each translator english skills and their free interpretation based on their own experience, or inexperience of waze map edition)

So, about the job done on the french wiki, it is a pure cosmetic revamping + content organisation/structure redesign, in order to rationnalize all this stuff. But the content is basically yours. Sometimes, few adaptations are performed to apply to the french context and/or driving rules. The snapshot are re-shot with french samples, but overall, we do not perform our own tests.

But this should change, indeed ;)

Jean-Pierre, regardless of the obvious relevance of your analysis, I'm not sure we (I mean you ;) ) are still sticking to the initial subject/spirit of this topic

As a matter of fact, the current revamping of the french wiki that we (you, me, and the rest of the wiki french team) perform, falls within the scope already initiated by our US colleagues and within the framework initiated by Karen.

We do rationalize, we do simplify, we do streamline the content of the wiki.
Doing this does not mean that we pass our local specificities over in silence. do we ?

And if, on the way, we detect some divergent "verified facts", I more than agree to share them with this burgeoning wiki master team.

So, I just found this thread and I have to say that it is great to see that the wiki will be getting more attention from staff than it previously had.

I would also like to point out that between the Spanish speaking communities we have already made our own suborganisation based on an article we called Latinoamérica (we are still trying to decide on a new name because the current one excludes Spain). We develop or translate the common content together and only use our national pages for our specific rules.

Welcome to the extended team Karen. :)

You will find this community very passionate about everything in Waze, so be prepared for some very strong opinions at times. ;)

We look forward to greater Waze focus at attention in supporting the greater community of editors. Since we only do this in our spare time, it becomes cyclical and a Waze employee focus will surely help keep things on track.

The biggest area we have left under supported is the application instructions. Certainly in the US, we spend most of our time documenting the mapping aspects of Waze and let Waze management manage the Waze application instructions. The recent changes in the help system (going away from nanoRep) is the most current documentation for the app. I'm not sure if you are thinking of adding any of the app support elements into the Wiki, but it almost seems like the current help system is probably a better place for that.

We have worked on many back-end plugins for the Wiki to help improve editing and management of the pages. I assume your new focus on the Wiki will help us get improvements in a more timely and coordinated fashion.

I look forward to the future Wiki, assuming of course we don't lose anything in the process.
