Map Editing Quick-start Guide

The Talk tab shows a link to a forum topic on U-turns.

I couldn't find a separate topic for this page, but there are several topics on subjects that are also written on this page. I would propose to have a general topic for every page, linked on the Talk tab. So people know where to leave a comment.

In addition, for these kind of overview pages, we could either refer to specific topics in the general topic, or provide the links to specific topics on the Talk Tab, like is done with the u-turn policy.

What do you think?

I want to make a change at https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Map_Editing_ ... _a_segment

I want the instruction reduced to
Add a new segment from nowhere to the point of the segment you want to cut. A new junction will be added. Delete the new segment just created. The new junction will remain.

Here is why I want to make this change:
* The second method is more-or-less identical to the first, so the difference is not useful to beginners.
* The third method loses traffic data at the disconnected node, and creates a brand-new segment. In most cases, it is preferable NOT to lose traffic data. It is inappropriate to teach beginners this way, so it does not belong in a quick-start guide. "Quick Start" is aimed at beginners.

I agree with you!

Why did you choose for "cutting" instead of "splitting"?

I replaced Turn Restrictions with Junction Arrows
https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Map_Editing_ ... ion_Arrows

I would also like to propose a simplification to that part, to make it better readable and understandable. IMO, the links on top of the paragraph should be placed in the text. Just start with the explanation of the arrows first.

The decision to remove "split" from the jargon was made because it was getting confusing. People said "split" and nobody knew whether they meant cutting a segment into two, dividing a highway, or making a fork in the road. Anyway, in English, "split" means to cut or break apart in the LONG direction, or "with the grain" (as in splitting wood) or along some natural "fault line". https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Split#Split

If I don't get any objections by the end of the week, I'll make the change I posted above to the section on cutting a road.

I put in {{Anchor|Turn restrictions (allowed turns)}} just in case someone somewhere was using a link to the old name of the section on junction/connection arrows.

I made the change to the section on cutting a segment. I removed the redundant and bad advice.

I would have preferred BREAK over CUT, since cut means something different in most of the computer world. But I missed that opportunity a few months ago.

At that time, also, we only had US editors in the conversation.
The situation has improved. I like cut myself, but I have heard that cut might be confusing in other languages.

* Break?

Any other proposals?

a real disambiguation is a clear explanation of what you want to reach with the split, break or cut: just making a new junction in an existing segment, or split up a segment into two segments. you can do both with splitting/cutting/breaking. It doesn't matter what word you use, although in my understanding especially cutting and breaking imply/connotate a separation... To us, "splitting" still gives the best understanding.

We incorporated both uses in the explanation of this term in our local wiki: https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Benelux_WME_ ... _a_segment
