Map Editing Quick-start Guide

The Talk tab shows a link to a forum topic on U-turns.
Link to forum on Talk Map Editing Quick-start Guide.PNG
I couldn't find a separate topic for this page, but there are several topics on subjects that are also written on this page. I would propose to have a general topic for every page, linked on the Talk tab. So people know where to leave a comment.

In addition, for these kind of overview pages, we could either refer to specific topics in the general topic, or provide the links to specific topics on the Talk Tab, like is done with the u-turn policy.

What do you think?

I propose to add information on the ability to select segments between two segments as announced here in the beta forum.

I am not a Wiki pro, but recently a junior editor pointed out that the info on this page regarding u-turns is out-dated and wrong. I have tried to provide some revised text below, but I would gladly defer to others that are more knowledgeable on this topic. I just want to see the Wiki updated, thanks!
NOTE: As of November 2014, it is OK but not necessary to allow the U-turn arrow where appropriate. At this time, Waze completely ignores the U-turn arrow in routing. At some time in the future, Waze might become capable of using the U-turn arrow. This advice replaces the advice from June 2014, which was to disable all U-turn arrows. As of November 2014, it is no longer necessary to disable u-turn arrows because Waze ignores them.

If you observe Waze using a u-turn arrow in routing for any reason, please notify regional or global champs immediately.

Fortunately, the lack of U-turn support can be mitigated with a workaround. User demand for U-turns usually concentrates on divided highways where drivers must make a U-turn to reach a destination on the other side of the road. If such a highway is already divided in Waze, a U-turn may be supported via a double-turn at a box junction or a hard turn at a bowtie junction. If such a highway is not divided in Waze and U-turn capability is demanded, a short section of the road near the intersection may be divided and a bowtie junction, or partial bowtie junction, inserted with the hard turn enabled. This approach effectively allows U-turn voice guidance using ordinary turn instructions. The need to support U-turns is one of the factors involved in deciding when and when not to divide a road in Waze.
I am proposing:
As of April 2015, the Waze app now provides "make a u-turn" verbal commands at properly configured junctions:
  • On two-way segment where the small u-turn arrow icon has been set to green (or yellow and outside of the restriction time-frame)
  • At a bowtie type intersection when the departure angle is 170 degrees or greater and the turn is set to green (or yellow and outside of the restriction time-frame)
NOTE: This advice replaces the advice from November 2014, which was it is OK but not necessary to allow the U-turn arrow where appropriate.

The Waze app, will still provide a "double-turn" u-turn verbal instruction at properly configured box junction. Please note, this configuration will not provide the verbal "make a u-turn" voice prompt, but a verbal command to "turn left, and then left" (or right, and then right) will be provided. More information about preventing u-turns at box junctions is available on the Avoiding U turns in box and partial box intersections section of the Wiki.

I think as a community, we will need to fully discuss where, when, etc. u-turns should be enabled, but in the meantime I could add a few sentences that say:

"It is not necessary to enable u-turns at every junction in Waze. Generally speaking, u-turns should only be enabled on segments: primary street, minor highway, and major highway; where legal u-turns are frequently made by motorist or where needed for proper routing."

Anybody else want to suggest more details?

Thanks,

I disagree with leaving u-turns off ordinary streets, dirt roads, and parking lot roads.
They can be very useful to routing on these road types. See the discussion on gas stations regarding parking lot roads and u-turns when PLRs connect one street to another.
Good points... So how do we structure a sentence or two that includes those points, is simple, and won't lead to every residential street with a u-turn enabled? :o

In the short-term can we agree to revise the page and add a warning that a final policy is under development, with a link to this thread. Or does this conversation need to be discussed else where, maybe a dedicated post about u-turns? Is this page of the Wiki, the best spot for information about u-turns? I defer to our Wiki masters for guidance...

Yes, thank you. Therefore, I think the statement below is factual and not guidance. Can we agree to change it; any objection and/or suggestions:
As of April 2015, the Waze app now provides "make a u-turn" verbal commands at properly configured junctions:
  • -On two-way segment where the u-turn arrow icon has been set to green (or yellow and outside of the restriction time-frame)
-At a bowtie type intersection when the departure angle is 170 degrees or greater and the turn is set to green (or yellow and outside of the restriction time-frame)
NOTE: This advice replaces the advice from November 2014, which was it is OK but not necessary to allow the U-turn arrow where appropriate. Further guidance about when and where u-turns should be enabled is pending, once consensus has been reached in this forum post:
viewtopic.php?f=276&t=136065

Also note, the Waze app, will still provide a "double-turn" u-turn verbal instruction at properly configured box junction. This configuration does not provide the verbal "make a u-turn" voice prompt, but a verbal command to "turn left, and then left" (or right, and then right) will be provided. More information about preventing u-turns at box junctions is available on the Avoiding U turns in box and partial box intersections section of the Wiki.
Any assistance that a Wiki Master can provide, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
