Sorry I missed your post back before my hiatus, and didn't catch it in January.

Here's the summary:
There are some inaccuracies in https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Segment_length#Too_long

  • What can and cannot be edited on segments partially outside the editable area -- see The first post in this topic
  • The waze team has let us know segments can be up to 100km long (previously, they took action to limit them to 10km long)

Here is a draft of the proposed rewrite for that section:

Hi, Voludu2,
I'm guessing that things have changed since this thread began, but I can edit all properties of segments that are partially outside my editable area, like name, elevation, lock, and even house numbers outside the area and endpoints for dead ends. If the road is connected to another outside editable area, it can't be disconnected, but that makes perfect sense, because disconnecting one road is a change to the other roads.

Is that your experience too? If so, it seems to me that the second bullet point in the "Too long" subsection should just be removed.

Thanks for testing this.

When I tried that test 9 months ago, I could change properties for shorter segments that extended outside my editing area, but not for longer ones.

How long was the segment you tested?
Can you repeat the tests I describe in the original post of this topic?
Can you add the HN test, which it didn't occur to me to try?

Thanks!

I tested a few PS that were less than a mile long, and that's what my previous post was about. Today I tested this segment, which is 10 miles long, and about half of it is out of my area: https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lo ... =501925669 I could change name, elevation and lock, but since it's a railroad, there were no HNs. I also tested this PS, which is 3.4 miles long, but only a few hundred feet are within my editable: https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lo ... s=85196127 I added a HN to it about 3 miles outside my area.

kartografer -- A pennsylvania editor just confirmed your findings on a RR segment 7.1 km long.
Except for the HNs, of course.

Name, elevation, lock level, geometry points.

Do we need to chase this up to longer lengths before making the change kartografer suggested?

I think it's been proven that you can edit anything about a segment (except for the opposite end node) as long as part of it is within your edit area. The only remaining question is whether or not there is an upper limit to the length of a segment before this proves not to be true. It should be a quick test to make a much longer segment and try it out, and answer the question once and for all. I am curious to find out.

I made a 99-km-long freeway extending out into the Atlantic off Hilton Head Island, SC. I could rename it, lock it, raise it, SL it, redirect it, bend it and lengthen it up to 100 km :) I deleted it, but feel free to do the same test if y'all like.

I think 99km is more than long enough for any road anyone may come across in WME.
As they used to say on that myth-related TV show, I think we can call this one "confirmed".

Thank you, kartografer and RussPA for testing this change in behavior.

I propose this replacement text. If there are no objections. I will ask the global wiki moderators to approve it.

That looks good, but I think the statement about Waze bots may also be outdated. If I try to make a segment longer than 100 km I anyways get a save error that says the segment is too long.
