[PAGE UPDATE] Map Protection

Post by Inactive user -1697532064-
I am proposing a small update to this page https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Map_protection

I noticed this paragraph:

Please note that the thresholds are high. It is unlikely to reach them when editing manually without using scripts.

This is true regarding some forms of editing, but it is definitely false regarding speed limit updates. I'll say conservatively that if more than 20 segments have their speed limit changed in a save, there's a good chance that the editor will be throttled. Some report a change of 15 segments to trigger a throttle. It has happened to me, and at least a dozen other editors have posted the same info on the edit throttling thread here: viewtopic.php?t=178006

So I propose changing the paragraph that I quoted to read:

"Please note that the thresholds are high. It is unlikely to reach them when editing manually without using scripts, except in the case of speed limits. Saving changes to speed limits on more than 20 segments at a time may result in throttling, although the mechanism may be changed at any time, so this is just an estimate."

It may seem weird to single out speed limits in the wiki, but this issue is demoralizing editors, and more accurate information may be helpful for those who are trying to get speed limits live in their area and are unaware that their edits often do not count.

There are also a few grammatical changes that I would like to make to the page, and where it says "points" to describe edit counts, I would like to change that to "edit counts" so as to disambiguate the term from user points that you earn for driving in Waze, reporting or making edits.

If anyone has more information on this, comments or questions, I'd be happy to discuss [emoji4]

I wondered about the numbers thing too. I will make a draft of my changes and am fine with excluding numbers, although at least a mention of being more careful with speed limits seems like it would be helpful.

Yes, I do most of my editing without any scripts installed at all (work PC doesn't allow them), and I have been throttled multiple times here. Since Unholy asked users in the Edit Throttling thread to PM him if they are being throttled without using scripts, I have done that but have not heard back. Are you saying that I should tell someone else?

I heartily agree. However, this edit throttling thread contains over 200 posts for the past three months pointing out how the throttling system is very severe with certain types of edits like speed limits, and there is no sign that it has been changed. Maybe staff has decided to keep it that way because of some users they know about who specifically try to get points with those types of edits, or maybe it should be changed and there is another way to do that which has not been tried. I don't know.

Just providing accurate information is not the ideal solution, but it certainly would be less frustrating than pointing people to incorrect information, who then think they are exercising appropriate precautions and don't get credit for legitimate work. So here is my draft https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/User:Kartogr ... protection

I'm new to wiki editing, but I figured you just copy the text from the page into a new user draft file. I changed some grammar, changed wording to be less ambiguous (edit counts vs. points and mass editing vs. massive editing), reorganized and changed a bit of info on automatic locks (they are only used in some countries, right?), and added a small caveat about speed limits. I appreciate the feedback and am open to any suggestions :)

Since edit throttling has been dialed back, I took out the exception that I had put in about that. Now this draft is mainly changes to terminology and some formatting to be more uniform and clear. I also added a short section on place locks, since that was not mentioned before.

I have to double check to make sure that 20 segment threshold is correct. I wasn't throttled myself when I updated more than 20 segments. I wasn't using any scripts.

There is a reason specific numbers were not included originally, and that is 1) so as not encourage editors to try and circumvent them, and 2) because they are constantly being reevaluated and changed behind the scenes. I don't think we should be including any such numbers in this wiki, in the spirit of the staff who helped write the original page.

As far as disambiguation grammar, I'm all for that and support the effort. Please make a draft of your changes in your user space so we can assess it as a community and approve it by consensus.

(Side note if you are finding that small numbers of legitimate edits without any scripts installed are triggering the throttling, and not being counted, then I encourage you to bring that to staffs attention (following the proper chain in your country (SM, CM, Champs, Coordinator) > Staff) so it can be investigated and adjusted.

Unholy is a fine person to tell. If it continues you can always send another PM. I would think we should not be encouraging people to avoid editing certain types of information, rather better spend the effort working to get the system fixed.
