Got it. Apparently that doesn't retain speed data in one direction so it doesn't help on that front, but it would be a good approach if junctions on either end were complex?

Did someone confirm the speed data is not retained? I thought we said it did with this procedure and that was why we go through all these steps.

What jasonh300 said, and I did try a couple of experiments to confirm before I posted. But

kentsmith9 wrote:Either way hopefully the addresses will transfer, but if the speed data does not, I am concerned the addresses might be in the same boat and also get jettisoned.

It makes sense for speed data to be lost because directionality is a pretty fundamental attribute, but addresses could be retained. Let's try it.

(update) Since addresses can't even be observed unless edits are saved, I've been trying to find a double roadway, with addresses, where I'd be willing to sacrifice the addresses by saving. I can't find one yet.

I have a section of dead end where I can mimic the issue and try un-splitting it with the house numbers on to see what happens. If that's OK with you?

On my test, un-splitting the road it lost some of the house numbers. So, it didn't preserve all those house numbers.

How to unsplit a road

Postby WeeeZer14 » Tue May 07, 2013 1:59 pm

Current wiki coverage is here: http://www.waze.com/wiki/?title=Best_map_editing_practice#How_to_.22Un-Split.22_two_One-Way_Roads

The instructions recommend deleting one side of the road. I thought it was best to merge both sides together in an attempt to preserve speed data. I bet that doesn't always work, but do we really not even want to try?

And catching up in these wiki related threads, I see there was concern about preservation of address points with an unsplit. Has anyone tried to merge two roads with separate address points to see what happens?

My approach is to take each one-way side of a split road and...
- make each road two way
- disconnect one end of each
- connect them to each other in the middle (each segment becomes half of its original length)
- delete the junction connecting them in the middle
- straighten and align as needed

Repeat between each intersection as needed.
Any small segments of side streets crossing the median I typically just delete.

I have also at times disconnected all side roads first and merged everything into two long one-way segments first, but I have no idea what that approach would do to addresses.

Orbitc, if you have a place to test, go for it.
