Area Place and Point Place should be used, IMO.

I still also dislike the keeping of "old" information in a guidance document. It is not relevant.

There is an existing bugzilla opened for new/changed categories I started a while back. @orbitc, you can use this in reaching out because the map guys should be using bugzilla for their workload too. It's likely some of what I've put in there will need to be changed.

The data model for Places, which is called 'venues,' has what currently displays as "Type" in the UI, is labeled as "Category." I prefer Category and the Places page was built assuming that it was going to be renamed soon.

As for Point/Area, I am fine with Type or Class. The data model uses the term 'geometry' which isn't helpful, IMO.

I have verification from Ohad that this error is on purpose. I can't think of why we would need overlapping Places with the exact same name.

FYI: "Categories" has replaced "Type" and "Type" now refers to "Area/Point".

I have updated the wiki.

nzahn1 wrote:I know this technically is a World-related thread, but I had a USA-related Places question:
Are we going to be releasing naming guidelines for places as well?

For example: Should every school have "school" at the end of the name, or is Elementary, Middle, Jr. High, or High enough? e.g. "Woodbridge Elementary School" vs "Woodbridge Elementary."

I'm all about making visible names on the map more readable at a glance, and "school" looks redundant to me.
I think that may be warranted. For 'school' I don't necessarily agree that it is redundant, but if the community votes that way, I'm ok with it.

I've just started building a list for Baltimore, I could open it up to nationwide comment if desired.
We should always be starting with national conventions.

DwarfLord wrote:I would urge the editing community to adopt objective rules to keep us from appearing to take sides in competitive business situations. If one liquor store can get an Area Place, they all should be eligible for an Area Place. Such rules would not be just for our own internal clarity -- they would be for our protection as well.
I would say that the guidelines are objective, and if editors are found to be not adhering to them, they should be redirected, mentored, etc. so that they can follow the guidelines. At this point, there is no "room" for one store of the same type to be an area instead of a point. They both get treated the same. Places is about searchability and navigation. It never has been about map display.

In the future, when we get a new map on the app which rivals/betters that of the current livemap and has thoughtful rendering of areas and points, then we can talk more about what guidelines can be modified.

It doesn't map the boundary (that I can see) but it does render the names.

So much discussion about runways which have no purpose for navigation.... :)

I'm starting a new thread about updating the Places page for the come editor/app updates.
