Very nice. What does the red screen mean?

you've received an alert. the default trigger is your user name, but you can add other triggers separate by a comma. The feature is listed to the left of the image.
Chat top pannel (if open) or chat button (if closed) change color to dark red (editable in settings) if someone type a message containing a word in a custom list (see tool tip text) in settings (case unsensitive). Returns back to original color when you send a message, or close chat window.

I agree. If nobody objects, I suggest DwarfLord make this change.
Done.

I have a bit of confusion perhaps someone can clear up regarding visibility and invisibility. One has two controls for these. Enabling the "Live Users" layer controls whether you see avatars, and enabling "visible" controls whether anyone sees you. Questions:

  • Has it been confirmed that an "invisible" setting really does render one completely invisible? No entry in the participating list, and no avatar displayed regardless of other editors' Live Users setting? (I have a recollection that in the early days this was not strictly true but doubtless there have been improvements.) If so, the "stalking" advisory would not apply would it? From a management perspective sometimes you're curious what someone is working on, especially if it's in an area you have worked yourself, but you don't want to alarm them unnecessarily. Perhaps that is rude even if one is invisible, and once I've taken a look at what's going on, it would feel odd to hang around anyway. But the WME appears to allow it. Strange situation.

  • In my experience the "Live Users" layer defaults to off. Seemingly every time. I am really not sure why WME has the layer at all. Why wouldn't someone want to see that other editors who are voluntarily visible are working in their area? It reminds me of Zaphod Beeblebrox's "panic-sensitive sunglasses" that go opaque just before you see something that might alarm you. But given that we have the layer, why does it default (apparently, at least in my experience) to off? It makes it that much harder to get other editors' attention. I forget to enable it all the time myself.

That latter point may be better off placed in the WME requests area but if Live Users really does default to off every time that's worth putting in the wiki. Unless it's there and I missed it...

in my experience it retains your previous setting, unless you load a permalink (ie from a UR email, pm, etc) and the layer was off in the WME that created that PL. PLs contain a list of which layers are active and can disable the layer when loaded.

Not sure I follow what you mean. At what point do you believe it is disabled by default? How do you get to that point?

When I am on WME and I select a permalink or refresh, if I had "live users" layer on, it stays on for me.

Looks like PesachZ has the answer for me. I must be turning it off all the time when loading permalinks. Thanks PesachZ!

Perhaps over in the WME feature requests area I'll suggest that the Live Users layer be forced perpetually on. If an one's avatar really is always visible regardless of one's "invisibility" setting, it is puzzling why anyone would want to be seen without seeing. It's not like there are so many other editors they would clutter the screen :o

invisible removed your name from the list, you essentially log out of the chat and can view as a guest. your avatar is also removed (doesn't update on the live users layer). so if I go invisible, jump to you, leave all while invisible, you will not see my avatar even if you have live users layer on. this is confirmed.

perpetually on isn't good either as it may interfere in viewing the map when there are multiple editors crowding a scene during a discussion/informal mentoring, there's an editor hovering over a feature you want to see (say a specific node or turn restriction arrow), our you choose not to participate on WME chat and don't want to be diatribes by setting avatars jumping across your screen.

if you use scripts you'll find they are also turned off when loading a permalink which was created without them, or with them off. it's just a function of how pls work. You override this by modifying the PL before loading the page to remove the layer section.

take this PL
Code:
https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=5&lat=35.59604&lon=-108.61566&env=usa&layers=1189

remove the layer section &layers=1189, if it's not at the end it's between the two "&" symbols, delete one of them. then navigate to the link and it will retain your layer defaults.

Like this
Code:
https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=5&lat=35.59604&lon=-108.61566&env=usa

Funny you would mention that. There is a thread in the forums about someone who took a screenshot of a crap ton of editors in one location. I swear it was around 15-20.

Good point, I edited the refresh paragraph into its own subsection

Refresh or reload screen[edit]
Reloading the browser page resets your WME chat window and erases the chat history, you may also miss messages sent while WME is reloading in your browser.
Map refresh icon.png
To refresh your screen, to see recent edits, reload the roads, sattelite images, etc; look in the WME main menu upper left for the small cycle button. Click on this to refresh your screen without reloading the page, or erasing the history of WME Chat.
When you click on the permalink icon in the bottom right, it creates a permalink (containing your current map location, segments highlighted, URs or MPs opened, and layers visible), and then loads that page. This will reload your browser window erasing WME chat history as mentioned above. This may useful as indicated below.

Seems like a good idea to me.

I added it to the Troubleshooting section:

I lost my chat history. Why?[edit]
Chat history in the current WME Chat is erased each time you reload your browser window, including when you create a Permalink. Consider only refreshing your screen from the main menu of the editor as noted elsewhere in this article.

I also made some other minor additions.

I'm not sure you notice I also incorporated this into a new section
#Refresh or reload

Yes... I did notice that. I am not worried about duplication in the article as it help people find what they need. If what I entered is too much duplication, it's ok to remove it.

I don't mind it either especially in a FAQ format. just wasn't sure if that was your intention.

I did add some pointers to the duplicate chat issue in the box. if no one else chips in I'll run with that and flesh it out a bit. there was also some info in it posted really in this thread

Your style might also translate better to other languages. I get the issue about linking and easier to scan in the index. I really don't care which way it goes as long as it is consistent, so change it as needed as far as I am concerned. I only have a few caveats...

-- Make sure the content of the body doesn't have to change given change to the title.

-- I don't think "Duplicated chat responses" quite captures the issue. It is not really responses but the own user's entry. Perhaps there are different words. Even "Duplicated chat messages" makes more sense to me.

I think I understand point one, so after I make the change check what I did to be sure.

I understand your second point. I could live with "Duplicated chat messages".

I took the liberty of making the change for you unless you don't like how I did it.

shortened headings. formatting. added user script comment

You should also add the screen share /chat program we used a while ago (no install required is a pro.

EDIT I believe the add-on is shared with the community page via transclusion. IT IS NOT. I will fix it

Utilizing selective transclusion, these two scripts are now shared with the community addons page via templates. This way the information only had to be maintained in one page.
