Old "landmarks" pages

Post by AlanOfTheBerg
After doing a little searching around the wiki, I think it's past time to redirect various landmark searches to the [[Places]] page. I just redirected "Landmarks" to the Places page. There are probably others.

The "Landmarks by Type (US)" page also needs to be re-done or neutered as that guidance is no longer appropriate, IMO. The US should also make very well-thought-out and conscious decisions on when to deviate from the global. It should be very seldom.

I removed the original Parking Lot Landmark text from the US Landmarks wiki and replaced it with a redirect.

As the author of the preamble to the US Landmarks wiki I do humbly think it may still have value as a brief discussion of the principles behind Area Places in general. If there is interest in my working that preamble into the Places wiki I'll think about how best to do it.

OK, I've taken the relevant bits from the preamble text of the obsolete US Landmarks wiki and reworked them into two short introductory paragraphs in the Places wiki. They may receive further editing there.

The only thing left in the US Landmark wiki is the minimize size requirement for a landmark. I have no idea if any of that is still relevant.

Hi all,
I'd really appreciate if information like this (from https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Landmarks_by_Type_(US)):
Information related to Landmarks changeover to Places:

This page is currently undergoing modifications. The information and guidance here is currently to be used for reference. The Places wiki should primarily be utilized when mapping landmarks.
... was much more strongly worded. I missed this when editing landmarks (places) yesterday and continued down into the contents of this woefully outdated page (and then made editing mistakes because of it). This is so much more than just "information". It should be a WARNING!

Here is my suggested wording.
WARNING: Waze has transitioned from Landmarks to Places. The content on this page (which shouldn't even be here) is now out of date. DO NOT USE. Please go to Places (link) to get proper directions on how to use this feature.
In my opinion, this page must go - NOW. If there is useful info still here, move it to the appropriate place in the Places wiki page. I'd do it myself, but I don't know what content in here should be kept and what should be discarded because I didn't make the decisions that lead to this transition from Landmarks to Places. Please, please, please get this fixed.

Regards, Eric.
