These countries use names like "Red House, <street name>" which have no chance of being properly entered into the House Numbering scheme.

I propose that the global guidance for Places include the explicit guidance on using the Residence category for specifying house locations in places where this is the default/standard addressing scheme. These would also be created as Point Places, as almost all residences are too small for an Area. And, since this is about search/navigation and not visibility on the map per se, then a Point Place is reasonable.

I don't have any draft text to include yet, nor examples to post. Let's discuss. And, anyone who lives where named houses are use, please include your feedback, experience, ideas or support here.
What to do, we no longer have a residence category?

I think what you mean is that you cannot name the new residential-type place, an can only use the address.

How about using category OTHER and specifying a format such as "Red house (residence)" for the name? The street name can still go into addresses - I think a search for PLACE NAME, ADDRESS INFO works, even with PLACE NAME only having a prefix search, and ADDRESS INFO being street, city, state from the place's address fields (minus house number).
No, what I mean is we used to have a subcategory of OTHER, named RESIDENCE. If you hover over the place point for a Category:Other place, you'll see the icon is a house, reminiscent of the old residence subcatgory. Used for things like large named apartment complexes which are often searched for by name, nursing homes, assisted living. Or possibly small co-op private communities, known by their name.

When we got residential places, the residence category was removed from the public places matrix. I was lamenting this loss.

qwaletee wrote:Yes, I understood that. I was comparing the functionality of the old Residence category to its replacement residential-type place. The only functional differences I can recall are that the new type

1) loses the ability to have a name/description
2) now requires full address (which used to be optional).
3) is invisible as a place on the map
#1 you mentioned is my biggest concern, #3 is an issue for named small areas like co-op communities.

Many Places don't fit into specific categories, but if they fit into a general category there is no harm in placing them there. Examples include liquor stores and tobacconists – they go into "Shopping and services". What happens if you search "shopping"? Do people search that? Should people expect reasonable results when they search that? Does it even link to the parent category? Somehow I doubt it.
Checking the category keywords list I have from a few months back (I highly doubt anything changed since), there are no keywords tied to parent categories.

The guidance always was if it doesn't specifically for into a sub category, then you use the best fit parent category.

That's not accurate. It is not guidance in the wiki. In the forum, several options (parent, other, closest match) have been discussed.
The guidance "I was given" which may not have been codified. But this is how I've practiced and advised others until now. It seems logical and simple enough to me, to be understood.

There will always be editors/wazers who don't comply and don't want to understand. I'm still regularly removing hospital categories from public point places of residential apartment complexes etc. [emoji27]

A search for just the word "lodging" will bring up a category result list for the "Hotel" category.
