2. We can't display a shield and a name. We hope to add this ability in the near future. In the meantime, it's best to give the primary name as the "I-80" or "US Hwy 101", and the 'local' name in the alias field.

Feedback I posted in the other thread:
AlanOfTheBerg wrote:Shields for properly-named in the Primary segment name for interstates are not being displayed per following the wiki-documented standard:

"I- 5 N" or "I- 5 S", and "State Rte 500 W" or "State Rte 500 E" for example, only displays the name and no shield. Segment directionality in the name is standardized, but it appears to disable the shield display.

Per other's thoughts, the restriction to the primary field will hopefully be removed. Just as "other mapping software and clients do" for displaying a name and multiple shield icons along the length of a roadway, Waze should eventually support multiples.

It occurred to me last night, there is a similar dilemma with the text-to-speech system: if we have to put the highway number as the primary name, and it has to be in a certain format in order to be recognized and turned into a "shield", the TTS will start calling Eastern Ave "State Highway 127", and Route 128 "State Highway 128". Bleah. Or, it can keep calling the streets by their common names, and no shields get displayed. Less bleah, but still...

Highway designations and street names need to be decoupled. (And segments can be part of more than one highway.)

If the shields are rendered on the client then what about the shields for other countries? As far as I understand the only problem is the number of countries because the rules for each individual country can be simple.

Shields are rendered as part of the map, so it won't be available right now on the world server regardless of how you name the street. We have to work on some graphics (get the proper shields for each country), but we are planning on adding them in the future.

First, both the primary name, which is used for the shield display, and the shield appear on the segments, which I find odd.

Second, there are many times when there is no shield showing on the screen. In my opinion, a shield should be visible on-screen for any shield-enabled segment at any time, regardless of zoom. As one shield scrolls off the screen, another should be scrolling in.

Thank you, this answers my question.

The shields and numbering rules for my country (and I believe for other European countries, too) are pretty simple and can be found on Wikipedia and other public sources. Do not hesitate to ask the international wazers if you need any assistance.

I haven't been able to find where the VIP status is listed either. If it is US only, then it seems odd that asterix06 was name checked for the million points VIP when he is in Europe!

Somewhat confusing.

So this must be the beta version where you see them? Because so far I haven't seen any.

I'm still wondering what to do about including direction in interstate names. It seems that the I-15 shield isn't displaying for the most part in San Diego, instead it's just showing the "I- 15 N" and "I- 15 S" road names.

I was worried about that several weeks ago and asked Dror to confirm that they still wanted us to add the directions. He said yes, so evidently they intend to make this work.

That's really good to know. Otherwise, big pain in the arse.

Does the spacing in the route number matter?

Krankyd lists the roads as:

I-15

The Wiki article and Unwallflower have:
I- 15

So should there be a space between I- and the route number or no space?

Looks like the naming convention listed in the Wiki is correct. Space in road name produces shields in Waze 2.4.

I- 15 N
I- 15 S
I- 805 N
I- 805 S
