Unusual Data Consumption After Waze Upgrade

Post by XKaliber
Hi All,

I recently upgraded to the Waze v3.9.0 for my iPhone 5 (MD293C/A) on Rogers carrier. Problems started cropping up with unusual data usage as it seems to trigger my "Time & Location" service. This only happens when I use Waze and not other GPS apps/location services. In a trip all of 20 minutes, my navigation required 40MB of data. Previously, I could travel for 2 hours and use 5MB of data. I know that data usage varies due to traffic, reports, etc. but nothing in traffic patterns around my area has changed THAT much to account for it.

Also, the data isn't being consumed so much by Waze itself (as indicated by the "Data used in current session") but something it's tripping on the phone. Using a data tracker and the iPhone's integrated "usage" stats, I could see that "Time & Location" service consuming an unusually high amount of data while Waze is active post-upgrade. I understand some geofencing and location-based features were implemented and not sure if that has any effect. While testing my drive this morning, I turned off everything else that could potentially consume data (emails, Siri, stock updates) These are the things I have tried:

- Soft restart on my phone
- Hard restart on my phone
- Uninstalling/reinstalling Waze app
- Turned "location services" off/on

I really wish I could install an older version of Waze and I could do some digging for find the old files and restore my phone, but has anyone noticed this type of usage and particularly something during the use of Waze that causes "Location & Time" to go wonky?

Please let me know if other info would help in diagnosing the problem.

Thanks.

Same here. It used to use very little data but now it uses a lot.

On my commute home it only needed 80kb to load and find route (wifi) but it used 500kb in the 15 mins it took to get home (2MB/H).

Could it be downloading photos of nearby favorites nearby that other wazers have uploaded?

I've had this same issue since the update. My 30 min drive to work now consumes 15MB of data. Before it would use 1-2MB. I tried turning off every new feature I can think of without completely disabling the GPS.

I can't use this app anymore until the data usage gets resolved.

Would love to know if anyone has found a solution to resolve this excessive cellular data usage under "Time & Location"?

I would guess Waze is trying to make use of new possibilities of Android and have more precise location information through the use of new internal functions that consume more data (through Wi-Fi and cellular positioning).

Maybe a solution would be to use "Device Only" instead of "High Accuracy" for your GPS parameters on your phone.

Similar but not consistent.
Last 15 days I've used 100mb (daily commute is 45 miles each way)
The entire billing cycle for Aug-Sep Waze used about 50mb
But the June-July and July-Aug cycles Waze used 160mb.

We need the high accuracy. With the phone's antenna being covered by the roof of a vehicle, as well as interior fixtures, we already have serious issues with people reporting map problems where we find that Waze "snapped" them to a parallel road and tried to direct them back to where they were.
