How to handle black aria after update ipad to iOS 8.0.2. It works for me. Shot ipad off. Start it again. In vertical position start waze, when app start turn ipad to horizontal position and you will see hall screen. Always start waze in vertical position first, or you have to restart ipad again.
I have the same issue and was expected an update quickly to fix it. I just deleted it and reinstalled it and had to creatively figure out how to get past the license agreement.
This is a big issue greatly affecting the UI and I hope a fix comes quickly. I love Waze and this is my first let down. Thanks

Unfortunately I experience same problem which frustraits me.
I also tried to reload and it didn't work so I concluded it is a bug and wait that Waze will correct it.

I deleted version 3.9 and reinstalled version 3.8 that is in my PC ITunes as a backup. Now everything works fine while I am awaiting a corrected 3.9
With the 3.9 Update on my iPad running iOS 8.0, in landscape mode I have a black area on the left 30% of the screen and cannot see the on-map menu buttons that used to be in the lower-left corner. In portrait mode, the black area is at the bottom of the display and I cannot see the meun button that used to be in the lower-right corner.
