Time & Location - High data usage

Waze latest version on iPhone 5s running iOS 8.1

I am on a 2GB/month plan so I tend to keep a close eye on cellular data usage. Recently noticed that Settings > Cellular > System Services > Time & Location was almost 300MB in about 20 days. In the past, I have never seen this more than 3-5MB. Checked a friend who has the same hardware & software and his usage has remained under 10MB/month.

What accounts for this high usage? I have background refresh turned off, Location Services enabled only for GPS apps (e.g. Waze cellular usage is around 30MB) and Find My Phone.

What exactly does "Time and Location" mean, which system components use this service and why has the usage shot up 100 times from 3MB to almost 300MB?

After a lot of trial and error, turn this off, turn that on, I am fairly certain that using Waze somehow contributes to the high cellular data usage. I have been using Waze for many years, across many different iPhone hardware and software versions and never had this issue before. Maybe a recent update to either the Waze app and/or iOS introduced this issue. I am still perplexed at why the usage is getting logged under a obscure bucket under System Services > Time & Location rather than the Waze app itself.

Anyone else seen this? Ideas? Thanks

Exact same probleme on my iPhone 6 / ios 8.1 / waze 3.9.1

Using Waze at least 1h/day = 350/450 mb of "Time and Location" data usage in 1 month

and "only" 150 mb of "Waze app" data usage in 1 month

Hope Waze devs read this thread :)

No, in my case:

CARRIER data usage (on the carrier website) = Iphone data usage (in ios settings)

You can send the logs when connected to wifi

sending the logs is a very small part of these 16 Mb (used under cellular connection in car)

very interesting... i have this red "Searching for network" several times /week...

for your information, i tried to turn off all the Apple Location Services everything off but Waze in fact... and i still have this "Location & Time" high cellular data issue...

FYI:

yesterday, i checked every 5 minutes my "Time & Location" data consumption while driving on the highway at 120 km/h, the results :

At min 00 ...... 00 Mb of Time & Location
At min 05 ...... 00 Mb of Time & Location
At min 10 ...... 00 Mb of Time & Location
At min 15 ...... 20 Mb of Time & Location !!! in one shot...
At min 20 ...... 20 Mb of Time & Location
At min 25 ...... 20 Mb of Time & Location

This morning, i drove 1h30 under 50 km/h (traffic), still on highway -> i ONLY use 1.5 Mb of Time & Location !

It REALLY seems to be an important bug related to "highspeed drives"

still under iPhone 6, iOS 8.1.1, last Waze version
still use ~500Mb of Time & Location per month (driving ~2000 km / month)

Hi there,

same problem with some users in Germany, Austria and Swizerland too....
But can´t blame it on "high speed" though. I often got that message standing in a traffic jam.

Please also take note, that our allowed data usage is around 300 - 1000MB only per month then it will go back to edge connection speed only (no really possible to use waze with that connection speed) - according to the contract. It is possible to buy more 3G or LTE MB - but well I said BUY.
According to how often we use Waze it might be around 10€ per month extra cellular internet usage...

So it would be nice to set this problem to a very important level.

EDIT:

Just updated to iOS 8.1.1 - no change... WAZE took over 20MB cellular for around 29km this morning (around 18 miles). Got the "searching network" message quite often - but also I was not able to send reports or choose an other route because WAZE App told me that it had problems to connect to the routing server... or it isn´t connected at all. (although I had full 3G service)

Hi,

same problem here. i'm using waze daily on german autobahn. This is the second month waze consumed my data volume on 10th of the month. If i disable waze in the umts traffic options the problem disappears.
Hopefully the Waze Team will fix this issue soon. I cant use Waze anymore.

In reply to your inquiry "High Data usage"
We are aware of this problem and trying to reduce the data usage.
Regarding to the "Searching for network" problem - you need do a soft / hard reset to your device.
