Setting Waze as the default navigation app on Android

Post by salilsurendran
Hello Friends,
I like Waze and would like to have it as the default navigation app on my Samsung Charge Droid device. I cleared 'Google Maps' as default by going to the Settings page. However, most applications don't bring up Waze in the options list when I click on an address etc. In fact I have seen this happen only once. What can I do to make this happen?

I don't see how this is a show stopper, but then again, I don't use Waze to navigate from other apps, it's self-contained IMO.

However, it would be nice if it was working, I do this sometimes. The old versions it would show the location in Waze but not start navigation. Actually, beta behaves the same, sorta. Except I saw the location marker, blank map, and it's kinda frozen now. Cute.

However, I believe Waze is offering itself as a "Map" source, not a "Navigation" source.

My phone lets me choose between (brute)gmaps and waze. For example when looking contact and pressing address.

I'm using android beta

Making Map/Navigation default to Waze on a HTC Thunderbolt (Android 2.3.4)

Settings -> Applications -> App association -> Physical address

Find Waze in the pull down menu and pick Waze as your default.

If you pick the address from your Contact list, Waze is your default Navigator.

From your Events in your Calendar if the "Location" is an address you can fire off Waze as your Navigator.

I had the same problem on my HTC Sensation. Installing the following app helped:

"Select Other Map for HTC"

Hope that works for you as well..

I use navigation from apps like Yelp and many times I use google voice search then click on the link for directions. So it is a pain when google navigation is available so readily. Any idea when this issue will be fixed.

If I remember rightly there are two intents, one is a Map intent the other a navigation intent.

Waze registers as a map intent, but not navigation. If an app wants to show you a map, then waze is a choice, if it wants you to go somewhere then waze isn't. At least i think thats the case iirc.

Yes to this. Waze simply isn't as robust for topical searches as say, the results in the Google maps app. Copying the address information from Maps or even your browser is too much of a hassle compared to accessing the built-in navigation with just one click. Is registering Waze with the Android OS really such a hard feature to implement?
