I was offline and didn't even know it.........

I forgot to turn on the data on my android for a trip from Los Angeles to Bakersfield.

Didn't realize I had no data until I went to turn off the data in Bakersfield.

The strange thing was I was getting alerts on the way up (police, objects, road work)...............

As it was said in various other threads with the same question. That's not the point of Waze.
Waze was built to find routes based on real-time traffic conditions for eventual re-routes and to be able to also display the reports from other Wazers around you.

Though you can use Waze offline as long as you at least start the drive from a WiFi or mobile data connexion and turn it off or disconnect after the road to the destination was found and navigation started, it wasn't meant to be used this way. You'd be better off using Google Maps.

That usually happens when you have a female passenger sitting in the front. They warn about every single red light too
