If you are using an iPhone, look in Menu->Settings->General->Notifications. You can turn them off there.

Note that most of these options only suppress them showing on the map.

Alert while sitting still will still occur (if you have not suppressed them from the map).
Also note that if you have join a group, the default behavior is to show new items for the group immediately. This is also a setting.

On my SD card when I attach phone as mass storage, it's under

waze/preferences

Use notepad, search for min speed

To left of min speed are some popup parameters which also may be useful
