Is there any way to tweak the geometry of the intersection to force a keep/turn right & a keep/turn left instruction to encourage the use of turn signals? Just a thought...

Not sure which route(s) are marked this way, but over here, turn signals are required for every turn and every change of lane, so the map would get extremely cluttered with these warnings.

A little bit of googling shows me the law in NJ is not much different from here:

The only route where I would not use my signal in this intersection is from SW to N (and reverse). Are the signals required for this route?

And, like with speed limits, the driver is always responsible for his own actions and should detect the road signs by himself. A GPS system is a routing aid, not a driving nanny....

I agree with Gerben. Which direction does the sign require signaling?

If it's something a typical 16 year old needs to know to pass the driver's test, it certainly doesn't need to be in Waze. If it's something odd, but it's clearly signed, it still doesn't need to be in Waze. I've driven in 38 states, and have never seen signage indicating that signaling is necessary where one wouldn't normally signal. So if this is the only place that is like that, it would be a bit ridiculous to write new code to handle that one intersection.

I guess lucky for you, NJ hasn't been one of them... apparently we really like to screw with the rest of america by eliminating left turns because jug handles are so much fun.

Excellent point about writing new code, if this is not a very common occurrence, forget it. I wouldn't expect to add a feature if it was very specific that a limited amount of people would benefit from.

NJ most certainly is one of the states! And I have to say, every experience in driving there has been hell, mostly because I either encountered a lot of construction, or because the weather was terrible. But I didn't see anything unusual that I haven't seen in other places...well, I did sorta accidentally drive a commercial vehicle across the Pulaski Skyway, but only because they wouldn't let me go through the Holland Tunnel!

Turn signal required notification and reset notification

Postby tpmcguire » Thu Jan 10, 2013 5:33 pm

Would a notification be able to be added for roads that require turn signal usage even when continuing on the primary road? The link below is to an intersection with signage requiring usage of turn signal and also resetting the turn signal once leaving the intersection. While most local people that are familiar with the intersection would know to use their turn signal, people navigating it with the use of GPS because they do not know the area would not know to use their turn signal unless they noticed the sign but usually they're paying more attention to their GPS than signage. Maybe the notification could be a flashing signal on the screen until the driver leaves the intersection and is then notified to reset their turn signal on the screen at which point their signal would stop linking as if it mimic their blinker on their car. Maybe the notification would have a preset countdown timer of 10 seconds or so once the GPS signal leaves the intersection so user does not have to engage to GPS to disable the notification.

Maybe a rule can be applied to either a geo-fence or all sections of road associated with it because generally if one side of the intersection has to sign requiring turn signal usage every other direction for that same intersection requires turn signal usage

The basis for the sign is due to it being a high traffic area and it is basically a fork in the road and the traffic pretty much splits evenly between left turns and right turns. If cars on the primary road dont use the turn signal it makes the traffic backup quickly on the secondary rd.

That SW > N and N > SW is the direction you would not think to, or legally be required to, use your turn signal. But there is a sign indicating it is required to indicate wether continuing on the primary road to the left(SW > N) or turning right(SW > E) onto the secondary rd.
