Hawaii State Highway Naming

I've been adding "State Hwy ####" to the alternate name field in accordance to the wiki table Highway naming/USA to aid in any search or navigation thingy that Waze may use. Then, in my research for roadway numbers, I came across this DOT page which names all the state highways as "Route ###". I also came across this thread discussing the Nevada State Highways and using NV-###. My questions are: What is our official nomenclature for Hawaii state highways? Do we use "Route" as the DOT does (or is "Route" a generic term)? HI-### for TTS clarity? Or "State Hwy ###"?
And in terms of freeway exits, do we add the route numbers for TTS to pick up? I've experimented in my neck of the woods with this exit in WME to match this exit sign: https://db.tt/xcT197JS, which only has shield numbers and not road names. Same questions regarding nomenclature.

I'd recommend using both "State Hwy xx" and "HI-xx" as alternate names.

It's possible that one (or the other) will better allow for better adoption of the shields.

Does the shield in question have "Hawaii" on it, or is it just a number with a circle/oval/square/whatever around it?

For TTS brevity (though I'm not certain this is within guidelines... just thinking out loud), I might suggest even using "Hwy ##" for those.

IIRC, the signs are just rounded corner triangles with white background in a black square:

Okay, due to this Permalink, I feel that we are doing visitors an injustice when they are using Waze here. Visitors do not know the road names that locals use. I would like to rename the state highways to their respective numbers so that the navigational TTS reflects the signage. Especially out in the "country". Until Waze can display highway number symbols from the alternate name field, we should use the highway number.

This picture is from Honomu on the Big Island. I renamed that road on June 21, 2013. As you can see, shield numbers do work in Hawaii.

There is total lack of consistency in various DOT sources, though I believe State Hey is what's been usedost often here.

I would suggest we use whatever's in the Functional Classificastionaps, except I still haven't been able to get the online interface for that to work. I think doctorkb has got it to work. I 'll renew efforts to find another source.

Thanks for this. I'm going to call DOT next week to see if there's a scannable hardcopy of the FC I can host someplace and put links at this wiki page.

I've noticed a couple of URs that reference "route numbers," and it's a bit of a sticky issue. Most local people know highways by their names, tourists by the numbers.

I agree. Frankly, we have a disproportionate number of tourist Wazers here, and we should do better to reflect that. I'll work on adding route numbers where I see them on my routes, too (Kahekili/Likelike come to mind).

One UR reporter recently complained about the Pahoa Bypass that should be State Hwy 150, I think it was. Then there's the Mamalahoa/Hawaii Belt Road confusion. I've tried to match signage where the changing name is concerned, but putting the route number should help, too.
