Piilani Highway Route 31 and Kahekili Road Route 340 on Maui

Postby deadbirddog » Wed Apr 29, 2015 9:48 am

I'm curious as to the way these roadways are currently shown in the WME. Both are marked as Minor Highways. While technically correct have any of you actually driven these roadways? Both roads contain segments that are dirt/gravel and have numerous one-lane segments and blind approaches. They can be driven carefully but my concern would be with the current designation Waze could easily route unsuspecting drivers onto these roads with no idea about what they're really getting into. Especially at night or in bad weather.

I would think marking these at simple streets or even adding a section of Dirt road / 4x4 trail in the middle would prevent someone who doesn't belong on one of these roads from getting themselves in a jam.

Just my .02 after driving both.

Having not driven them, and only been on the Hana Hwy once, years ago,I can't say. If you feel the change is necessary, check with Cloud887 who lives there, and doctorkb. Also Machete808 & Nacron

I'm in the same boat. I am aware that the southern route to Hana, from the Kihei side, has hazard advisories out there on travel sites -- my brother looked it up over the holidays, and he went that route with friends. Said it was OK, though it was clearly daytime and, well, he's from Colorado and not easily frightened! :-)

But you do raise a good point, deadbirddog. Our state's functional classification is still in draft form, but I'll check my copy of that. AND I think I will PM the Maui editors, which also include Knight-- (recently changed his ID), and bring them to this thread.

Part of the challenge is that these roads slowly degrade, so having a defining point where you change their type is challenging.

The trouble with this is the way the routing engine works. We already have trouble routing from Kihei to Kula (the routing engine doesn't like that the straightline distance is SO much shorter than the driveable one). It will "prune" these roads sooner than it should in some cases, if we change their type.

The bottom line is that routing in this area doesn't seem to be an issue right now. Change this, and it might become one, particularly to destinations along the path.

Yes, you might argue that the visuals don't match reality. They're not really highways... at least not in the continental US idea, anyhow. But Waze has never been about the visuals. The strength is in the routing engine and its ability to get you from A to B in the quickest manner.

I didn't have any issues with the South Hana route...in fact I found it infinitely preferable to the northern route. It's relatively safe but unquestionably less so at night. I wouldn't recommend night travel or inclement weather travel at all beyond MM 30 toward Hana. There are way too many blind approaches that are one lane (at best) in width. There are parts of the road that can and will flash flood and be washed out in rain. Of the two roads I mentioned though it is by far the safest route. There is a 5 mile segment of Kahekili Road (340) though that is even worse because of it's altitude and drop offs. Take a look at this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciR2KvadLt8

The temptation to use this road is really high coming out of Kahului toward Lahaina...especially when traffic is so bad there. I wouldn't want to drive that road at night or in rain under anything other than life or death circumstances. Because it might be. Waze properly routes you on the main route but when you see a "Minor Highway" offering what might be an alternative around bumper to bumper traffic people will take it. It's a scenario ripe for trouble on this road. The South Hana route is not nearly as problematic.

If that's the case, the reasonable person would find out quickly.

You should have received a warning from your rental car agency not to use that road.

Also, when there is almost nobody on it, you should be asking why.

The bottom line is that fixing it (as you're proposing) breaks it.

I grew up here and the Hana road use to be pretty bad in some sections and the Piilani use to have major dirt sections. The road now however had been heavily reconstructed as well as constantly maintained in areas that get "washed out" by heavy rains.

As for what Doctor said rentals are warned of road hazards and anything that can cost the renter money after driving on.

I can tell you I know the road around Haleakala extremely well since we conducted a serious Search and Rescue about a year ago and I walked nearly every mile from one end of Hana Hwy to the end Kula by foot over the span of several months.

Also NEVER take a rental car around the West Maui's side of the island, you think Hana and Piilani are bad. West Maui side we are talking single dirt road with sheer cliff on the side with two way traffic.

I haven't gone from Hana to Ulupalakua, but did the Wailuku to Honokowai route about 5 years ago. It wasn't half as bad as some of the bits around Ulupalakua... At least it wasn't then.

The Road to Ulupalakua is significantly better, and the parts that are even regularly washed out are maintained pretty regularly.
The roads that go around West Maui from Napili to Wailuku haven't changed much at all there are some serious wonky areas, but it is drivable.
