This shows that the questionable part of 340 is Maui County maintained, not state maintained. This is what I said earlier.

http://www.hawaiihighways.com/maui-part2.htm

or perhaps from the Hawaii DOT site:

http://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/home/m ... -highways/

It was never an argument. It was always a suggestion. I've seen more than my fair share of dead and broken bodies from roadway mistakes. I care about the people driving. I care a lot about Waze or I wouldn't be editing or posting here. I built Iceland by hand..it took hundreds of hours. I care a great deal. I don't want to see something like this happen to Waze:

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/woman-h ... e-1.446397

If you take caring for arguing then pardon me. Please don't mistake the two.

That is an interesting source, however, the issue of maintainer isn't in question.

It is HI-340, a state signed and numbered highway.

Worth noting the comments on there about the quality, though... It has improved over the years.

"originally county-maintained Federal-aid highway, apparently added to state highway system in late 1960s; State route 340 begins at its east end near mile 2.6, reflecting its original inclusion of what is now State route 3400"

That was what I saw in your link, it did mention it is county maintained but you have to remember the jurisdictional aspects of Hawaii are really strange due to left-over territorial provisional govt. administration. I mean we have a Maui Police Dept., Maui is a county, the Sheriff's don't do anything except transport prisoners really...(Why I am leaving Hawaii to get back into law enforcement.)

Piilani Highway Route 31 and Kahekili Road Route 340 on Maui

How would that legal issue that was linked result here? We've marked a legitimate highway as a highway. It isn't marked a freeway, nor does waze suggest it as a route to West Maui (as far as I've seen or heard).

That segment is signed as a county road. If a county maintains it then it doesn't have state road classification. Part of it does, but not all of it. It will show this as the fastest way as well. If anything perhaps adding a night-time restriction might be an alternative. Again, I'm not arguing with you here. I just don't want to see anyone get themselves in a jam.

The lawsuit link I posted is highly relevant. If someone takes that road and has an accident there is certainly grounds to sue Waze if Waze used that road for routing. The Google case wasn't nearly as strong. We live in a litigious society. Lawyers circle like sharks looking for anyone with deep pockets to dip into. I could make a strong argument about this road based off the recommendation of 4x4 only from the HIDOT site. Those roads are not normal USA highways. If you look at similarly constructed roads in the US mainland they don't have minor highway designations in Waze. There are always exceptions to general rules (It even says this in the Waze road description) and I just thought these roads might be one of those exceptions. It's not about who's right. It's about what's best for those who actually drive the roads.

On a different note to Cloud...be careful what you wish for brother. LE is not what it used to be. Especially not now. I don't miss it at all. I thank God ever day I'm no longer a part of it. You stay safe.

That is interesting that you produced a route using it -- I have never seen one come, and I've tried.

That said, having driven on roads signed US-xx on the mainland (eg Kentucky), I can tell you that HI-340 or MC-340 (whatever you wish to call it) is safer and in better shape than some of these US-xx highways on the mainland.

If you can show me a US Federally marked highway that is one lane in Kentucky or West Virginia (where I'm from) with no guardrails on a cliff side I'll gladly buy you a 12 pack of the beer of your choosing.

Road lane width standards require a minimum of 9 feet per lane.

Let me see if I can find it again. There almost certainly wasn't 18-feet of asphalt, and while not a cliff, the blind humps were concerning.
