Fixing the Honolulu city layer

Postby Machete808 » Mon Nov 14, 2016 2:58 pm

EDIT: These are the source maps I've been using:

CDP

http://histategis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/ ... 71b1174fba

USPS:

https://eddm.usps.com/eddm/customer/routeSearch.action

-------
There are far too many communities occupying the city layer across urban Honolulu, and it needs to be pared way, way back. I have to own most of this problem, adding a lot of them to generate more "useful" traffic alerts in the app, identifying where the problem is.

But there are just way too many repercussions. Places get created in the app and default to the City on the nearest segment, which generally is wrong. And now it's clear that the City listed in an Residential Point Place must match a nearby segment in order for the RPP to top the search results list.

The entire stretch of Honolulu, from Red Hill to Hawaii Kai, is defined as "Honolulu" as a Census Designated Place as well as in all the ZIP Codes. So actually all segments will need to have Honolulu on them somewhere, as an alt City if not the primary.

So I'm proposing using Honolulu as the primary city at least through urban Honolulu. There can be exceptions to that, but Honolulu will need to be an alt City for any exceptions.

What might these exceptions be? Hawaii Kai, Waikiki, Manoa, Kalihi and Salt Lake come to mind. Any thoughts on this?

Exceptions are ultimately what led to this. Honolulu as primary, others in alternate

I'm not sure the alt serves any purpose, if it's not in any postal address. I'm fine with an all-Honolulu primary for the entire CDP, with no alt. I just didn't want to slam the door on anyone who thinks we need to see more than that City label hovering on the app. There are plenty Places marked to help with orientation, I guess.

It's just the traffic-jam or accident alerts; in town, they'll all say Honolulu. But then, the distance will tip people off that it's far away or near.

So unless anyone can think of a down side, I'm going to blitz any City other than Honolulu, within the Honolulu CDP. Simple -- and then we wouldn't have the issue of mismatches with postal addresses.

Yes -- though I've got Aiea cleaned up, through Pearl City, I think. Also most of Windward Oahu, up to about Laie. So it's really town side that needs attention.

Not that it's such a heated rush -- I just wanted to settle the Honolulu question before I dive into that task. Assuming we're basically OK with Honolulu being the City name for, well, the whole city! :D

P.S. I've noted the source maps in the original post.

Vicki,
Don't know if I'm glad to no longer have EA there or not. You and I were having this discussion last time I was there!

OK, just to follow --- on the GHO, Korey mentioned the value of having a few exceptions.

There are actually two Honolulu CDPs -- Honolulu (urban Honolulu) and East Honolulu. Doesn't make practical sense to use East Honolulu; he suggested keeping the valleys: Palolo, Niu, Aina Haina and then Hawaii Kai at the end. This would at least make visual sense in the app. And then we'd keep urban Honolulu intact. Of course, Honolulu would be the alt in any exception areas.
