Unpaved
All roads are mapped with the correct Paved / Gravel option.
Remember to enabled the check "Dirt roads" in the navigation settings of the APP.

It is important to understand that roads are all correctly mapped, but it is not possible to choose with an option in the Waze's APP between "Unpaved" and "Off road - Not maintained". The "Off road" category is used for the "mountain roads". These roads need always a 4x4 because it isn't possible to ford the rivers with a normal car. With a rent car you need to have a special insurance.

It's necessary to check always manually the name of the roads if you want to avoid the F-roads. The names of the mountain roads start always with the character 'F' before the number.

Roads Analysis
Roads: It is inclusive of all the Icelandic road system with the speed limits, updated at 2016.

All national roads in Iceland have a number, and this is the simple way to search a road on Waze because you can see the number also on the road signs.

The Road System in Waze follows as possible the National System and it is composed:

Primary roads:
Roads with 1 digit "only the Ring Road Hringvegur (1)"
This road is in Waze as Road type: Freeway, Major Highway. it is completely asphalted (Paved).

Roads with 2 digits. example: "Vestfjarðavegur (60)"
These roads are in Waze as Road type: Minor Highway (Paved) and Primary Street with Routing Preferred (Unpaved).
To improve the routing in a few exceptions as Major Highway, for example Reykjanesbraut (41) connection between Reykjavik and the international airport.

Secondary roads:
Roads with 3 digits. example: "Dettifossvegur (862)"
These roads are in Waze as Road type: Minor Highway (Paved) and Primary Street (Unpaved).

Primary highland roads:
Roads with 'F' and 2 digits. example "Sprengisandsleið (F26)"
These roads are in Waze as Road type: Off-road / Not maintained.

Highland roads:
Roads with 'F' and 3 digits. example "Veiðivatnaleið (F228)"
These roads are in Waze as Road type: Off-road / Not maintained.

Local access roads:
Roads with 4 digits. example: "Keldunúpsvegur (2048)"
These roads are in Waze as Road type: Street.

The "mountain roads" are roads with the letter F before the number.
These roads are in Waze as "dirty roads", are always gravel and they have fords to cross the rivers.
It possible to use this roads only with 4x4 cars and they are opened for a few months in the year.

Off-road driving in Iceland is prohibited by law. Due to our short summers, Icelandic soil and vegetation is extremely vulnerable. Tire tracks can leave marks for decades.

Brjánslækjarvegur-Flatey
