an update on what bangus236 posted
Hello fellow wazers, I have a few suggestions or guide as to how we should edit our roads. I've noticed that a lot of problems and update requests are due to incomplete or incorrect information on our map. A lot of these issues could be avoided if we follow the "Best Map Editing Practice" guide in the wiki (http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Best ... g_practice ). Please comment or add other issues you have encountered.

1. Create road (whether tracing aerial images or gps points)

2. Set road type, some suggestions:
Freeways – Expressways and Toll Roads
Major Highway – Road that crosses multiple provinces
Minor Highway – Road that crosses multiple cities or municipalities
Ramps – On and off ramps from Freeways
Primary Street – Main thoroughfares of a city or municipality
Street – ordinary street, mainly residential
Service Roads – usually access roads leading to or from an establishment, an intersection, that is in parallel with a freeways and major or minor highways
Dirt-roads / 4x4 Trails – usually non driveable roads so not used for routing
Parking Lot Road – within a commercial or private parking lots, not used for routing
Private Road – within gated communities, subdivisions, villages, or compounds. Not used for routing
Walking Trails, Pedestrian Boardwalk, Stairway, Railroad, Runway/Taxiway – other non drivable and non-routable roads
(http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Best ... _and_Ramps )

3. Set directionality (two way, one way, dead end) (http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Best ... 26_Locking )

4. Set the level (ground level = 0, Underpass = -1, Flyover = 1, 2, 3, etc.) (http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Best ... nderpasses )

5. Connect or create junctions (attach to existing roads) (http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Best ... nnectivity )

6. Set turn restrictions (http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Cart ... nnectivity )

7. Name the road, if you don't know the name, set the city, if you don't know the city leave it alone. Somebody else could edit it. It will be highlighted in red so that an editor can easily see an un-named street.

8. When naming streets, omit "City" and "Street". Eg. "Pasig City" to "Pasig" only and "Dela Rosa Street" to "Dela Rosa" only. Except when they are not "Streets" like "Kamias Road", "Aurora Boulevard", "Ayala Avenue", etc.

9. Do not split roads unless they are Expressways, Major, and Minor Highways. Even if they are Major or Minor highways, do not split them if they do not have wide median barriers. Split roads complicate routes and are harder to maintain. There is a guideline in wiki about this here http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Best ... n_Practice
Some formal guidelines - A road should be split if:
There is at least 5 meters of non-drivable surface between directions of travel. (This means a median of some type like cement, planter boxes, trees, or just grass.
GPS tracks show a clearly definable gap/blank area between the color-by-azimuth arrows at the 100m zoom level.
It is an Interstate Highway (USA) or other Limited Access Highway using the "Freeway" road type.
A road should not be split because:
There is a curb or non-drivable media less than 5m wide between lanes of travel. This means a turn lane, even a wide one, between directions of travel, does not count because it is drivable.
There are a lot of roads intersecting which can only turn onto the nearest direction of travel.
Google Maps or other mapping source show it as a split road

A question to the map editors for the Philippines, keep the road maps simple or follow dedicated turn lanes? The reason I am asking is that adding dedicated turn lanes (usually right turn) adds additional junctions to the road. An example would be the intersection of Julia Vargas and Meralco Avenue here https://world.waze.com/editor/?lon=121. ... TTTTTTTTFT
and the intersection of Julia Vargas and San Miguel/ADB Avenue here https://world.waze.com/editor/?lon=121. ... TTTTTTTTFT

I'm for the simple approach or the first example, how about the other editors?

what does additional junctions do?

most editors would add those turn lanes for sure.
they add a time penalty for every junction. not only that, it clutters the road and makes maintenance a bit harder.

the time penalty is used to determine which street is faster for a given route, a street with a lot of junctions will be slower compared to a street with no junctions. this may be due to incoming traffic from those junctions merging into the street. the turn lanes will add to the time penalty and i don't see any value it adds to routing except that it follows the real road geometry

I've already edited this error, although the fix might not be available on the live maps until the next map tile update.

That is correct. you've got it.. unfortunately, as mentioned before, once this error makes its way to the updates, it sticks there indefinitely despite the segment being rectified.
If you look at Manila and it's city layers, there are only a few errors with regards to city names. I have been painstakingly looking for those errant segments and so far so good. only a few more around the outskirts and boundaries. time to broaden my search to nearby cities and municipalities

there are times where following the road geometry isn't really a good thing, these are when the road is complicated and to draw each and every segment on the map further complicates things and causes routing errors.

I agree, that is why if I encounter URs which really isn't permanent on the map or is an issue with the client, I just mark it as "Not identified" and not do anything

I suggested to the other Philippine editors to keep the map simple, like what you said, make one segment if possible and avoid multiple ones. We have our own guidelines for mapping the Philippine roads since the roads here are not similar to 'US standards' or 'UK standards' :)

I think this usually happens when another editor is editing the same segment and saved his work before you did :D

Is not it better to follow real road geometry?

Navigation then produces better guidance for driving, which I guess is the main point of waze?

I do not think, we should bastardize maps, just because current version of software, does not do the right thing.

Long term it is easier to fix software to do the right thing, than later on fixing maps.

Hi guys,

I was driving this afternoon and Waze wanted me to make an illegal U-Turn along Ayala Ave.

Tonight I checked hoping to fix this but everything seems fine, no Left Turn allowed (so no U-Turn, too):

Can anyone check to see what's up? Thanks.
