Over the last few weeks I have edited the map of the township / suburb of "Kokanje" close to Modimolle, South Africa. (This is where I stay and I drive it's streets regularly).

I have added all the streets together with their names, tried to get all the turns right and saved the work over the span of quite a few sessions. On the map it looks fine and no problem is reported. If I drive the roads, my car is shown correctly on the road and the roads are indicated correctly on the map. I have also added my "Home" and it is indicated on the map by a little checkered flag.

However, if I am not at home and tell the program to take me "Home" it cant find it. Turning off the R33 at the usual place seems to surprise the program. It still recognises the streets and street names, follows the road indicated (which I have drawn in there) but seems surprised every time that I should turn off there. (There are no other roads into the township). In the meantime it keeps informing me that, sorry, but there is no road home and suggests places thousands of miles away.

I am hoping that this unlock request will finalize the map of the suburb. If there are more tasks to perform I have to beg for your indulgence and please advise me what and how. I am now 77 years old and am getting too old for complicated computer work!

Smit Steyn

In addition to Leigh's detailed reports and suggestions, I would recommend installing at least one addon that should make some of the mentioned problems (and other issues) much more visible by highlighting the relevant problems.
If you are a Google Chrome user, you can install it directly from the Chrome store at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... iccaaniaih. The addon's name is 'WME Validator' and it is also discussed in the Waze forums here.
If you use Firefox, you'll need the Greasemonkey add-on installed first, and then you can use the WME Validator script version from userscripts.org.

Both download links are also available in the first post of the WME Validator topic.

Good morning Mr Steyn

The biggest problem I see are there being multiple segments on top of one another, making it difficult to see what is going on, and even harder for Waze to route properly. So firstly, I'd suggest removing the following duplicate segments:
R33 segment,
two unnamed segments,
Kokanje Road segment,
unnamed segment,
unnamed segment,
136m Kameeldoring segment,
114m Kameeldoring segment,
365m Kameeldoring segment,
unnamed section,
unnamed segment,
unnamed segment,
Sering segment,
all of which are unneeded.

All these duplicate segments also make it hard creating the junctions with the correct segments, so once you've cleaned up all the duplicates, you'll have to go through all the junctions and make sure they are still valid, and correct if needed.

I also see you have apart from setting the turn restrictions, you have also enabled the u-turn, which should not be done, unless a u-turn is specifically allowed. I was going to direct you to the relevant wiki page, but the wiki is down today for an upgrade. So each intersection should have two green arrows and one red u-turn indicator, but only one green arrow per road. A keyboard shortcut you can use is "s", which separates the direction arrows when they are on top of one another, so if you look at this intersection of Kokanje Rd, Kanniedood and Kameeldoring, then press s, you will see three arrows on Kameeldoring, which indicates there are three connections here.

That should keep you busy for a while.

regards,

Leigh.

The wiki is back up again, so the Map Editing Quick-start Guide has a whole host of useful information, but especially relevant now are Turn Restrictions, which includes details about not enabling the u-turn restriction and Overlapping roads, as Kameeldoring and Witkaree cross one another, but aren't joined, so that needs to be corrected. Same with Wag-'n-Bietjie and Boekenhout

Some more redundant segments:
Maroela segment,
Unnamed segment
