Street Classification Source

Postby Jarve1024 » Thu Feb 25, 2016 1:25 am

Yeah, this is a nit picky thing. But if I ever dig into it, I'll find some way of verifying classification which isn't the same as somone else's and make them unhappy.

While the Wiki is mostly clear. Regional Government is not.

For example I'll pick on a few streets in Halifax: Sackville St (South Park to Summer), Veterans Memorial Lane and Barrington St.

Street Waze PDF Open Data GIS Streets GIS Topo OpenStreet
Sackville St Street Street Minor Collector Street Major Street Unclassified Street
Veterans Memorial Lane Street Collector Minor Collector Street Major Street Unclassified Street
Barrington St Major Highway / Primary Street (MacDonald Bridge) Arterial Arterial / Major Collector (North Cogswell Interchange) Highway / Major Rd(North Cosgwell interchange) Major Street Primary Rd / Secondary Rd (South Cosgwell interchange)

EDIT: There's also Explore HRM (http://maps.halifax.ca/website/ExploreHRM/viewer.php)

 To make the OpenData source clearer, change the style and select Ad ST_CLASS Attribute.

Based on licensing I'd assume OpenStreetMap is incompatible with Waze. The Topograpic GIS basemap doesn't have enough granularity.

The Open Data License allows for translation/adaptation. BUT including the phrase
Contains information licenced under the Open Government Licence - Halifax
in Waze wouldn't be easy (I assume it'd be another line/link on https://www.waze.com/legal/notices)

Now I'm back to speed limits

Honestly, I'll be done editing when Waze knows the fastest way between all my destinations
