New Port Mann bridge and ramp configurations

Post by Kayos_On_The_Road
Hi,

Now that we have updated satellite imagery we are in the process of updating ramp locations and names etc for the PMH1 (Port Mann Hwy 1) upgrades. Codgerd and I will probably get the bulk of the work done, but driving from Lougheed into Surrey today I note that there may be an issue to be raised with Canada Champs.

The ramps on either side of the main through freeways are intended for local traffic, i.e. between Surrey and Coquitlam. The main through freeways are intended for traffic passing through the area on longer trips. In travelling from Coquitlam (Lougheed Hwy) to Surrey (200st) I was routed onto the Exit 48 ramp on the Coquitlam side, then back onto Hwy 1 on the Surrey side rather than being routed onto the Hwy 1 Freeway segments. I ignored the routing instruction and took the Freeway segments.

This has some knock on impacts. First, the distances between the main freeway segments and the side ramps is not sufficient for waze to pick up the difference and did not recalculate the route. Second, because the route was not recalculated, segment transit times between the freeway and the ramp will be mixed up. This can lead to people being routed onto side ramps rather than through freeways (as I was). Finally, if waze thinks you're on the ramp and not the freeway, you get additional TTS instructions which are needed for the ramp to rejoin the freeway, but not needed if you're on the freeway.

Thoughts on how to deal with these issues would be appreciated.

Thanks
Kayos

I'm cleaning up some of the ramps around Exit 44, a lot of the ramps have names that need fixing, and realignment with the GPS tracks and new satellite imagery.

I've done some searches to see how the problem is dealt with in other places, with not much luck. Notably Toronto, with its express / collector setup on the 401, must deal with pretty mixed traffic data.

We have naming issues on Hwy 1 segments around here, I've noticed in the past. Around the Second Narrows bridge Hwy 1 goes from "Hwy 1" for both directions to "Hwy 1 E" and Hwy 1 W". I can't remember where it changes again, but it's somewhere in Surrey (I'll look later), going back to Hwy 1. I think the directional named segments Hwy 1 E and Hwy 1 W should be changed back to Hwy 1, as per wiki guidance. Worth looking into, as name continuity is important in triggering detour prevention algorithm if I recall.

I will put an unlock request in to change the offending segments, in the meantime. No idea if it's related to the strange routing, but should probably be done anyway.

True enough, sorry hmarian...

West of these segments it's Hwy 1. From here just south of the Second Narrows bridge in Vancouver all the way to these segments in Surrey it's Hwy 1 E and Hwy 1 W. East of here, it's back to Hwy 1.

I doubt this relates to Kayos's routing woes, as the transition back to Hwy 1 happens well after his ramps rejoin the highway. But, still something that needs fixing, I think.

I closed my UR when I relocated the junction node, then thought I should have left it open to show the issue. In any case, this segment is the Coquitlam side that I passed through today. If you look for closed URs, you can see my routing.

The equivalent on the Surrey side is here. I have also been routed onto the ramp in this direction too, but in that case it was correct as there was a crash on the freeway sections and the ramp routing avoided it.

Other potential issues are here and here, although I think this last one is very unlikely to cause problems, but you never know for sure...
