Layton: Hill Field Rd ThrU-Turns

Post by marnoot
Area in question:
https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lo ... 421&zoom=5

The "ThrU-Turn" portion of this project (http://www.udot.utah.gov/LaytonImproved/hill.html) is complete and left turns are no longer allowed at the Main St and Gordon Ave intersections.

The first relevant Map Problem has been reported, and shows the path through one of the bulb-outs here: https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lo ... st=4781049

Unfortunately where Main St is involved (Level 3 lock), a level 3+ editor will need to do this update or unlock the appropriate sections of Main St. Opening this thread because I believe this is one of (if not the) first ThrU-turn type intersection in Utah and I'm not sure if some standard of how it is to be entered is wanted for the state.

Would we edit these similar to the "Michigan left" intersections? (https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Michigan#.28 ... .28MUTI.29)

Haven't seen any specific problem reports with it, but I do notice if I do some test navigations on the live map that Waze really tries to avoid routing via the ThrU-turns. It sometimes suggests the ThrU-turns, but more often suggests more circuitous paths that I'm fairly positive would take longer.

Not sure how to reduce the apparent routing penalties on the Thru turns. It definitely takes longer than a regular left-turn (potentially waiting at 3 lights instead of 1), but I'm pretty sure many of the circuitous routes Waze is suggesting are longer.

I was just up by Walmart running some errands so I checked the west thru turn on Hill Field Rd, and it does connect to the parking lot road there which didn't move, so I've gone ahead and moved it on the map.

The north thru turn on Main St is also not quite where the UDOT map showed it, and in this case they did move the parking lot road, so I've updated these as well.

Thanks jellicle0! I tweaked a couple of the parking lot turns on the ThrU-Turns to try to ensure the user gets a "turn left" direction on those, but agreed that we'll just have to do some driving through these to get them tweaked right.

Did want to bring up for discussion one thing I noticed on the previously linked Michigan page, on these types of turns they're using Ramp for the road type in order to hide the "To W Hill Field Rd"-type section names from the end user, rather than using the same road-type of the road that the ThrU-turn is on:
Although this departs from traditional rules for At-grade connectors and for use of the ramp road type, it hides the instructional street name in the client. It is close to the exception stated on the at-grade connector page, however, in that a MUTI [ThrU-turn] is a signed--though unnumbered--exit from the current direction of travel on a roadway.
Seems like that might be a good idea to implement here as well. Any opinions on the matter?

Thanks, dmcrandall! That takes care of the two on Hill Field itself; there are two more of these on Main Street. The UDOT map doesn't label Main for some reason, but you can see the two "bulb-outs" there on Main Street on that map.

Unfortunately, Main is locked at Level 3 and I am a level 2, so I can't add them. Could you or another 3+ add them on Main as well?

Here's a new Update Request showing a track using the southern Main St bulb-out: https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lo ... st=4782516

Thanks again!
