Railroads

Post by mwburn
I've seen a lot of new railroads being added that don't cross any roads. Are we now adding all RR lines, other than those specified in the Wiki (still not quite clear if those should even be added since they don't have any effect)?

I'd be ranked higher if I drove more than 5 miles to work. :-(
But I only have to drive 5 miles to work. :-)

In addition to the wiki guidelines:

1. Don't create a RR segment for each and every parallel line. If there are 3 tracks at a crossing or paralleling each other, one RR segment is enough. Even in rail yards with dozens of parallel tracks, don't map them all. It serves absolutely no purpose. Go with the edges, similar to parking lot roads.

You can be marking them, which is a long way from "should." They currently have no effect on anything and aren't visible in the app. I'm pretty sure there are actual roads, neighborhoods, even some good-sized parking lots which could use some help.

Alan hit it, while we can, we really don't need to. If we do it's one trail for each right of way not per track. Mostly the only reason I have Trax marked in was to reduce the frequency of it being paved by those riding on Trax, it still happens every now and then but not as often, or if it does, when they go in to edit they see that it is already there and delete their red trails.

Mostly however it does not need to be done.

Plus the RR road type makes a good note to fellow editors tool. I've used it in a couple places where people kept drawing in a road to match the aerials but when in fact the road has been removed. If we use it too much for real railroads that might get a bit confusing.

I admit that I created a few in some more urban areas, seeing as they crossed lots of roads, some are utilized by TRAX, etc., referring to the guidelines as seen here: http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Waze ... s#Railroad.

I made sure to follow the guidelines which ask that we cross the roads, but not create intersection points. Also, I made sure that they had the lowest possible level, so as not to interfere with regular roads. I do admit I did get a bit carried away with one railroad line out to the boondocks, but since it intersected several roads along the way I finished it that far.

As I understand it, (especially in the more urban areas) we should be marking the railroads...am I mistaken?

I completely agree, and haven't marked all those, just the main ones coming from different directions, and just one line for several parallel tracks, etc. As you've stated, since they don't currently show up, I guess there isn't much point in showing them, though if they do become visible, that would obviously change.
