Utah's Belated Functional Classification Thread

Post by Daknife
We're a bit behind the curve on this. Not because I don't support it, but because I've been busy and nobody else steps up, or even seems to participate in the Waze forums in this state.

We have to get to work on converting the road network in Utah to meet compliance with the Federal Functional Classification system with a couple modifications needed to facilitate routing in Waze.

Each state DOT generates their own FC maps, which are then authenticated at the National Level. Utah's are located here UDOT FC page

I strongly suggest taking the time to read through the very lengthy thread discussing this. viewtopic.php?f=276&t=85397 It took me a while to see the benefit of this massive number of edits needed, but the benefit is real and will only serve to improve Waze.

The Wiki entry on this is also critical reading, mostly to see how to actually categorize the changes.

I've started around the Roy/Riverdale area and will start working out from there. It'll take a little while to get a large enough area to really see the overall effects. So for the time being we need to start on the Primary collectors, converting them to Major Highways, we'll work down from there. I've already converted Hwy 89 border to border to MH, any other US hwy's need to be changed as well. Including US 6, US 40 and US 91 where it doesn't run with US 89. And any others I've missed.

If any questions feel free to PM me, and if needed I can launch a G+ hangout so we can discuss it there.

I'd be glad to help with this effort. After finding this thread (and the other discussions referenced here), I can definitely see the benefit of using Functional Classification to categorize streets.

When I first started map editing I was using this map http://www.udot.utah.gov/main/uconowner ... 0535238803 from UDOT to determine whether a street was a state highway or not. However, I can now see that using the Functional Classification map will improve routing choices for users.

Being a level 2, I'm sure I'll run into areas that I can't update, but I'll let you know when I do.

One early discrepancy I'm seeing is with the state FC maps. On the page I linked to, the dynamic map has 1900 W (in Roy other names heading south) marked as a primary arterial. but on the static maps linked to below the dynamic map it has that road as a minor arterial. As through most of North Davis and South Weber counties that road is THE primary alternate to I-15 on the west side of the valley. As such I am making it Major Hwy all the way down, at least until Main Street Layton breaks at the Layton Parkway. And most likely beyond that through Kaysville to US-89, south of there is a little more debate-able. As Legacy is a much higher capacity alternate.

I haven't been able to get online lately, go ahead and request unlocks for the next couple weeks at least. For the time being lock any MH to 3 to prevent others from changing the edits back.

I don't know if it's a bad link or my phone but the link in your first comment opens to somewhere in NY. But most likely I just missed it so go ahead and change it.

When you do/did your FC, did you use the National conversion matrix in the wiki, or is there a state specific version you're using?

Which color corresponds to which road type?

Looking around Orem/American Fork area, it appears to be:

White = Fwy
Red = MH (mostly)
Green = mH
Purple = PS

I was trying to see if anything in Payson needs updated for the functional classification, but I can't tell from the UDOT map how to tell if a state highway is "Principal Arterial" or "Minor Arterial" Granted, this is Payson we are talking about, so there may well not be a principal arterial.. ;D

I'll start to work on this, too. My Area Manager range is pretty much Kaysville to Lehi. I do also have a 4-mile radius along approx 1-15 N & I-84 W from Kaysville to Idaho on onward, as well as most of Cache Valley.

I've also noticed a couple of little segments that look like you were converting Minor Hwys into Major Hwys, that might have got missed: https://www.waze.com/editor/#?%23%3F=&z ... 38&env=usa
Are those intentional? If not, if I come across any that I can't change, would you rather I DM you, or put in an unlock request?

I've done Kaysville (and a little bit of Layton) through North Salt Lake (hopefully correctly - I might have confused myself once or twice, but I tried to triple check myself as much as possible). I've run into a few locked segments that need to be changed:

And along Redwood:

I'm sure I'll find more.
