Street names in Chinese / Pinyin (English)

Postby dantw » Sun Nov 18, 2012 12:14 pm

Finally I wanted to get the China Waze forum a little bit alive and like to pop up a first question.

I was editing some roads in Shanghai and saw that there is actually no basic common way to name roads.

As you know, to get waze working as it should work it is essential that as many drivers as possible using it! However, a Chinese won't use waze if the whole map is in English (Pinyin) only.

My approach is now, to get the names in Chinese and Pinyin, this would be then, as far as I know, the first full useable map in Chinese and English for China. I might be wrong, but as I was buying a navigation a short while ago, no real "dual language" navigation was available.

Example for "dual-language" would be an road name input like:

南京西路 / Nanjing Xi (W) Rd

In order to keep the input shorter I would suggest to use abbreviations for North / East / South / West / Middle - (N) / (E) / (S) / (W) / (M), as well as for Road (Rd) or Avenue (Ave), same as on most of the official road signs.

Or does anyone has experiences with alternate street names? Will they be displayed on the map as well and could be used to name roads in Chinese and Pinyin?

You can switch the waze to Chinese (at least the iPhone version), including audio guidance. As far as I can tell that works fine.

But it seems that the search function is working in Pyinin only, at least I could not get any search results by using Chinese characters, even I know the road is in the waze map in Chinese / Pinyin.

I doubt many Chinese people will use Waze.

Thus stuck with us expats input.

I have been using pinyin only, based on what the road sign says except replacing Lu with Road.

Good luck on Shanghai roads!

I dunno WTF is happening in Changzhou but when I name a road 'Changzhou' it changes by itself to Chinese '常州'

Many many roads are wrongly marked as 'chanzhou'

godda say too, if someone has coded for this to happen, then the choice of using Pinyin is dead.

why not in all places? why not just change the whole database instead of one locality?!

honestly WTF is happening here?!?!

I've been struggling with this, I appear to have upset a fellow Wazer. Would welcome ideas, no offense intended towards anyone.

Need to see the "text boxes" in the sea (landmarks).

With thanks.

@ jack139, thank you, that makes sense. I wonder if anyone who is a level 3 or higher editor could remove the "graffiti" from the client, these issues are best dealt with here in the forum! Surprised to see this reaction from an "Area Manager".

Happy to observe recommended protocol, thank you for explaining.

Kind regards.

如果没有一个比较一致的路名写法,搜索的功能就废了,所以应该还是以中文路名为主,因为这个是统一的,翻成英文可能会出现译法不统一的问题。
