Locked

Closures - Please supply the necessary details

Post by iainhouse
Setting real time closures in Waze is really satisfying - we can immediately help Waze users avoid bad routing. It's also pretty easy to set up a closure if you supply us with the correct information! :x
  • A permalink including all the segments that require closing
  • A short, simple reason to show in the client for the closure: "Resurfacing", "Sewer repairs", "Burst water main" etc. Even a generic "Roadworks" if you can't find anything more specific
  • A start date and time. Whilst it may seem pointless to set a start time sometime in the past, it then provides useful information. If you see a closure with a start date of 3 weeks ago appear, then a "general error" UR from 2 weeks ago may be instantly explained
  • An end date and time
  • Any online links, in case the editor setting the closure wants to check something
This is all included in the Posting Guidelines, but I'm still dealing with many requests that don't include some of this information.

Often, the source of your information won't quote times - so make a guess! If you don't, we have to. As a guideline, if the roadworks look like something scheduled (e.g. resurfacing), I generally guess a start time of 6am on the first day and an end time of 8pm on the last day, particularly if the closure runs Monday to Friday. If the closure runs up to a Monday, I guess that it's supposed to go all weekend and be re-opened by 6am Monday. If it's a fairly short closure for something like a burst water main, then I guess an end at midnight.

If you regularly make sensible requests, particularly if you're an Area Manager, I'm likely to just add your closure immediately. But I can't do that if half the details aren't supplied!

If you want a closure applied to one or more segments locked above your level, there is a useful technique you can use to make this request.
  1. Find an segment you can edit, near the segments you want closed
  2. Apply all the closures to this "donor" segment. Make sure the closures are two-way.
  3. Supply a permalink for the segments you want closed, also including the donor segment
  4. Supply a second permalink for the donor segment
The responding editor can then open your first permalink and use the "apply to all" button to clone the closures onto all segments. Then they can use the second permalink and remove the closures from the donor segment.

Please note that this technique only works if you're already a level 3+ editor. L1/L2 editors can't create closures at all, so won't be able to create the donor closure.

Setting closures provides no credits in terms of points or edits, so this doesn't cost anyone anything or lead to anyone getting "extra" credits. It also avoids unnecessarily editing segments to lower lock levels and obviates the need to remember to come back & re-lock after the closure is complete.
