L4 Closure and Contraflow, A55, N.Wales

Post by MrSoapsud
Hi,
More traffic misery in North Wales as the westbound Pen-y-clip tunnel is closed for the next 2 weeks whilst something is done. It's almost more of a news item when the A55 is fully open.

So, this segment plus a bit either end as far as the crossovers will be closed and this segment plus or minus a bit at each end will be contraflow so not 1-way.

Here is the Traffic-Wales page and [url-http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-w ... s-10814215]here[/url] is what the Daily Post makes of it!

It's all L4 locked so I couldn't touch it if I knew what to do! The cross-overs aren't mapped as yet - should they be there and usually closed? (Not certain which cross-overs they're using yet - there are a couple of possibilities.) Given how often we have contraflows (impression up here is that the powers-that-be in Cardiff think the A55 is only used in the holidays!) should the 2 sections be 2-way with one closed most of the time? Given it's 2 weeks and not a diversion and drivers have no choice, should the works even be entered on the map?

There's also mention that from the 14th Feb there will be similar antics in the Conwy tunnel but they haven't clarified which way first.

Thanks
Martin

I don't think there's anything we need to do at all here.

Yes, we could map the segments as 2-way with a near-constant closure, but it will just introduce complication and not improve routing. And if we get the timings wrong, missing an opening, we could end up directing users onto the wrong carriageway when it's open in the other direction. Drivers may be unable to follow those directions, but they aren't going to be impressed by them!

If they run a contraflow when the tunnel is closed, then the routes through this section still exist and can be used. If the contraflow slows things down significantly, Waze will probably still pick that up without realising cars are on the wrong carriageway.

We have similar situations in London. The Blackwall tunnel has separate bores in each direction under the Thames; and at the Dartford crossing, 2 tunnel bores go northbound and the bridge goes southbound. At both crossings there are often roadworks, accidents or unusual weather conditions that lead to one direction being closed and the other running in both directions. Since the effective routes in each direction remain open and the diversions are clearly signposted, we just leave things as they are. :)

I guess there's a fair amount of this sort of stuff all over the place. I think I reached the same conclusion as you by the time I'd finished typing it, but thought I'd ask anyhow.
Cheers
