Level 4: Rotherham, B6066 Highfield Spring

Post by titchy_
My level: 1
Reason: 2nd attempt at trying to fix this routing error. I believe @kkervinjones did a bit of a bodge (no offence) which works occasionally but not all the time.

When driving from B6066 Highfield Spring to B6533 Poplar Way West you can only use the link road. However, as per screenshot from my phone attached, Waze routes me to the roundabout and asks me to make a left. This is dangerous as the lights for both the roundabout and link road go green at the same time so a collision is highly likely if you are to attempt a left from the roundabout.

I'd be interested to know how Waze works out this route. Surely it must be based on distance and/or time? I can think of plenty of these junctions around where I live and most work fine so not sure what the issue is with this one. Feels to me like this whole junction could do with reworking by a higher ranked editor.

It looks like Keith put my Roundabout Hack in place, but the angles weren't quite correct. I've now nudged one of them a couple of degrees.

Roundabout bypass lanes are always a problem. Normally the bypass is faster - but if Waze tells you to route via the roundabout, GPS positioning isn't good enough for Waze to spot you took the bypass lane, and the higher speed gets recorded for the roundabout route. That makes the roundabout route more attractive and hence more likely to be used the next time - and a vicious circle ensues!

My hack works my making the roundabout route "look" like a u-turn: two consecutive 90° turns going through a segment <15m in length. This doesn't make the roundabout route impossible - it just makes Waze try hard to avoid it. So in some traffic circumstances the roundabout route can still be preferable, but it mostly works very well.

This is about the only thing we can do for roundabout bypasses, since Junction Boxes will not work with roundabouts. :(

First off, a Permalink, which you really should have included in your first post and saves me potentially making a 3rd excursion to find this part of the map. ;)

I've hacked it a bit more: I've "borrowed" part of Poplar Way that should have good speed data and used it to replace the bypass. I've also put in some alt-names to try & trigger Detour Avoidance. If this doesn't work, it might be a case of completely replacing the roundabout.

Prompted by your other request to change the names, I went back and had a look at this issue.

The last changes I made are updated to the app. I tested the route in Livemap for every time of day - and it is now routing 100% via the bypass lane.

100% correct - unfortunately.

It's been like that since day one. It took them years to get Junction Boxes working at all and since roundabouts are a special class of segment, I'm not really surprised JBs can handle them - much as we would all love it.

To be fair, there aren't many countries in the world that have quite so many of them as we do.

1. I screwed up! Level 6 is no guarantee of infallibility and I made a big mistake here. I left the bypass lane as 2-way. I've changed it to one-way and put a 48-hour closure on the wrong direction (that's as long as you can close an edited segment for). With any luck, we'll get a map update before the closure expires. It will look odd in the app with the candycane stripes, but we'll have to put up with that.

2. Moving the segment you suggest will probably not help. The problem is because in reality the bypass lane is close to the roundabout route, so Waze can't tell if you took the suggested route or the other. Whichever route it recommends, it will stay "snapped" to it even if your GPS suggests you are on the far side of another segment. You have to be a long way off to break the snap. I suspect that's your UR there - if you look at the green trace, you will see that where Waze thinks you are can vary quite a bit from reality, particularly at turns. In fact, that's a relatively accurate GPS trace compared to some you will see.

3. As for using the bypass in the "correct" direction: I just checked Livemap and it is still consistently using the bypass lane at all times of the day. That tells me that historical segment speed data is now definitely showing the bypass as the quicker option. The only thing that will override that is real-time speed data from Waze users: so if Waze still gives the roundabout route, it's because live data at that time is showing that the bypass is slower. There's nothing we can do about that and rebuilding anything else won't help, as that only gets rid of historical data.

Thanks for the explanation and for sorting it. Waze routed me along the bypass road today 8-) . I guess it would be good if you could prohibit a double left (left at roundabout, left at first exit).

This still doesn’t work properly. Today it took me to the roundabout to turn left. @ianhhouse is there anything else that can be done? Could the link toad be drawn slightly further away from the roundabout?

Apologies for not including the permalink. I do know to do that so please forgive me.

Thanks, I'll continue to monitor it.

Yes, I've been routed along the bypass lane for the past two days

Hopefully this will stick now. Thanks again.
