new editor outreach

so how do we get new editors engaged in the community so we can help them learn and make quality edits? it all starts with the initial outreach. i think most of us have tried the form letter approach with mixed success. i know when i received the first form letter i kind of glossed over it and maybe clicked a link or two.

a while back a new editor finally responded to the forth outreach attempt from multiple editors and the new editor said that they didn't respond because they got the first, the second, and the third form letter and just thought it was automated. they actually responded on the forth contact when just a simple note was sent. it got me thinking that maybe the form letter isn't the best approach. the form letters normally have a ton of info and can be a bit overwhelming and intimidating i think.

over the last year i have just been sending very short informal messages and it seems to be a bit more successful. don't get me wrong, i still have dozens of outreaches that were either unopened or opened but no response. it just seems to be a bit more successful with the informal approach. i include some relative links in case they never respond but the idea is to get them on the hook before the deluge of info begins. i follow a few basics in these notes- keep it positive, don't point out bad edits, be encouraging, and urge the new editor to join discord.

this approach is by no means state guidance just me sharing another technique. the important thing is to keep reaching out to new editors.

a sample might be something along the lines of-

Thanks for posting this! In the past, a lot of us used very long introductory emails, which may be causing the lack of response from new editors. I'm exited to try this quick and simple version out, and encourage others to use it as well! :)
