Road Shields (split of Localization tasks)

Postby aigarslv » Thu Feb 07, 2013 5:53 pm

It would be really wonderful to see road shields in Latvia ;)

We use a system like this: Image

Major Highway is Image

and we have only 15 of them from A1 to A15

Regional highway is Image

And also 5 Europen highways: Image

This is a simple version of what I've asked Adrian some days ago, please check if it's similar to Portugal:
- shields are just rectangles with a border and a specific color
- shields can be width adjustable, or just all the same size. In Portugal the largest size is N999-9
- shield backgrounds are blue #00F for auto-estradas (same type as your Ax), green (can't remember the official colour) for european names (the E77), red #F00 for IP (principal itinerary) and white for other types - IC (complementary itinerary), N (national roads) and M (municipal roads)
- regular expression for automatic shields ^(?:€ )?((A|E|IP|IC|N|M)([0-9]+(?:-[0-9]+))).* to capture the street type (for the background) and the letter plus number for the rectangle text.
- we ensure the street name is correct, without spaces or dashes after the first letter.

As far as I can see, it's the same there, just switches the A from blue to red, and the regional (our IP probably) from red to blue.

Adrian, maybe it's worth to do a (most-)europe joint effort as we all use the same conventions, just slightly different background colors. I don't recall any country with specially designed signs like the US, here it's all just simple rectangles.

Yes, the idea is the same!

Only for us this is very easy to do, as there are not so many roads and they are already marked by letter and number. Basically in roads name: A - means red shield, E - dark green and P - dark blue

You can see this system very well in Google Maps: https://maps.google.lv/?ll=56.816666,24 ... 4&t=h&z=13

Almost the same in Czech Republic. We have D[0-9]+ (red) and R[0-9]+ (blue), all have the segment type set to Freeway. There are also the the international routes E[0-9]+ (green) in parallel which are not in our map but if the shields are implemented, we will be very pleased to add them to the segment names within few days too.

As the discussion starts to be very intensive, can somebody with the champs priviledge move all the relevant posts to new thread "Route shields"?

EDIT: The only important difference is that the D/R-type shields don't have the letter while the official name is with the letter but both implementation variants are acceptable.

Localization tasks

Postby maantje76 » Thu Feb 07, 2013 7:24 pm

There isn't an easy solution to import the roadshield at the moment. This have to be done by hand with lists of segment ID's. There are plans to add a feature in the future for WME.

We're discussing this quite some time for the Netherlands (since september last year or so). Waze is working on a short piece of freeway with shields. Just as test/example. But as said. It is to much work for Waze doing this by hand for every single segment.

:((

I wished there was a way to do it automatically, and hence why I gave the example of using the regexp and limiting to freeways, majors and minors. We've been using that regexp rule on all relevant out-of-locality roads. Oh well, we'll wait for a later stage then.

I think most European shield do only differ in colour and the presence or absence of the letter before the number. The only 'strange' shield is the German freeway shield:

If I recall from my 8 years in Germany, I think it would be safe to keep a simple Axx blue and a Bxx yellow rectangles without that design, to keep it simple for Waze, wouldn't it?
