Reminder: Car Parks Should Not Be Mapped!

Post by
As of September 2016 and the advent of the Waze Parking Project, these guidelines are obsolete. Please see here.

As per these guidelines, car parks should only be mapped as Places if they are general purpose and not for the sole use of customers. This means only town council car parks, NCP, park and ride, etc should be mapped as area places, so that anyone who drives to town centre location can find nearby parking that they know that can use.

Edit: the next version of the app will automatically show car parks when approaching the destination.

All supermarkets and businesses that provide dedicated parking for their customers should have the 'Customer Parking' service ticked, and no car park place drawn on the map. Users will be searching for a <place>, and Waze will use the combination of stop point and parking roads to navigate them to the appropriate parking.

On the UK map, there are 18,657 car park places, most of which were drawn a long time ago.
Of those car parks, 8,167 have no name. This is no help to anyone searching for parking, and is not distinguishable from other shaded areas on the map. There's also another 2,817 car parks with the useless name of [P]. I estimate there's at least another 1,000 car parks with generic names for the place they serve.

That means that 64% of car parks are incorrectly named, and almost all of them should be deleted from the map.

So, next time you see a car park, here's a quick checklist to run through:
  • Does the car park comply with the three principles? Public, General and Significant
  • Does the car park have a proper name? E.g. "Queen St Car Park" (no [P]s please)
  • Have the car park roads been correctly added?
  • Is there a correctly named place for the building of the business(es) there?
I appreciate this comes across as rather harsh, but I'm making a point. Hopefully, with everyone working together with the same guidelines, we can bash these car parks in to shape.

Go get 'em!

Have you tried PM'ing him and pointing him towards the relevant sections in the Wiki? But it also looks like there may be more than one new editor there who needs some guidance. :o

As it's outside your area I would also PM the AM so that he can decide what to do (nuke the lot or not). ;)

Hi John and welcome to Waze map editing. You are spot on with the car park and I would definitely map it as an area place, stick it on the map and the next editor along will guide you gently if you have made any mistakes. ;)

I take it you found the UK Wiki entry on car parks, there is a link to it from the first post, also if you get bored there are some more links to the UK Wiki in my signature.

I wouldn't add the on street parking, it fails too many of the rules, it hasn't got a name, it's not significant, and it's not really a car park as it's on road and apart from anything else they are probably too small to show up as an area place in the client. It looks like they were added by an editor who is no longer active  and now you have highlighted them I expect they will get deleted pretty quick. I'll leave it for Tim.

Hi Tim,
when is that data from? Is it pulled from the live map or editor? I only ask because I went through Stafford and deleted a bucket load of car parks recently.

Urgh, it would appear that all my place edits haven't stuck. Although they did appear to do so as I was checking them after saving. Looking at them this morning though, nope!

99.99% of West Kent [P] free and mapped to the new standard.

I would of put 100% but there may be the odd one I've missed as I've yet to run a +URO filter scan.

Hi Ian,

Shade the B&Q only and tick the Parking for Customers option in the "More" tab. The car park should not be mapped. Move the centre point (the navigation point) to the nearest road and in the Address for the place add the nearest road name (or one from which the car park is accessed).

Hope this helps (and is correct!)

Looks like an editor has had fun in Nottingham adding every road they could possibly do so. Might be time to uplock the perimeter roads on this one?

Hi,

So what about Supermarket car parks that are free to use for 2/3 hours?

Also, as an aside, Waze HQ will need to allocate more space (characters) to the space for the web address as the following example shows:

Code: Select all

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/storelocator/storelocator_detail_view.jsp?storeId=2100&bmForm=store_details
is truncated to:

Code: Select all

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/storelocator/storelocator_detail_view.jsp?storeId=2100&bmForm=store
And which doesn't work.

Hi,

Yea, I suppose you could use tinyurl or some-such. Not sure whether that would be an accepted or professional approach?

Hi,

If the aim is to remove all the area type landmarks for car parks, you could use points pinned to the car park entrance points?
I suspect this could also apply for airport car parks?
